Hair line marks on 845 tube. Help!
I noticed a few hair line marks on my 845 tube. The tube runs really hot on my Cary amp so should I be worried? Are they cracks? Will it blow up in my face the next time it heats up?

Mike.......Tubes have vacuums inside the glass envelope. I would think it would implode and collaps inward.

Mike.......If it is a hair line scratch in the glass, and not a crack in the glass, I would not worry about it, although I am the type of person that would change it just to keep from worrying about it.

I can't determin if it's a crack or a scratch. When I run my finger nail on it, it feels like a deep scratch. I'll try to take a good picture tonight and post it here.

A picture of what it looks like might help us, figure out what it is. But, I do agree, with Dan, and Ivan, if it looks scary change it. It's not really the imploding that would be a problem, besides a little glass to clean up, but if it is cracked, and the air gets to those hot plates, filament, etc, then the sparks would fly I think.

I would not operate that amp until the tube was replaced because as you know, should it go, it will take out a board or other components too.
Call Dennis Tuesday -- but, there won't be peace of mind until you replace it even if it is good. Not worth the chance & headaches afterwards. Bob
