Another "rock" link... Tom Petty
Tom Petty Superhighway Tour Once you get logged in it will indicate you can download the album in 24/96 FLAC files. I only listen to Tom Petty at a bar with beer in hand, so not something I'm jumping on. Good news though. |

Double-wow!
I bought an SPDIF cable for my mac mini and downloaded the free HDtracks 24/96 album. My PS Audio DAC is only 16/44 on the USB input. Now, the SPDIF optical output of the mini is supposed to suffer from some jitter issues, but it'll let me play around with this high resolution audio thing until I find a new UBS output/new DAC solution. I also downloaded the 15 day trial of Channel D's Pure Music. I will buy Pure Music for 16/44, as I love the Memory Mode (loads the entire track into RAM before play, reducing the change of hard-drive access related hiccups). Anyway, the 24/96 stuff from HD Tracks and out of Pure Music sounds pretty great (cue Larry David "Prrrettty, preetttyyy good") despite the stock SPDIF interface on the Mac Mini. Impressive! I'm a high resolution downloads believer.

How do you get FLAC files to play in your itunes libray? I would like to download HD tracks music but the AIFF files are small in comparison to FLAC.

Pure Music allows importing and playback of Flac files. I've only been playing with it for a few hours, but I think Pure Music is an excellent add-on to iTunes. At least, they sold me. :-)
iTunes doesn't identify the bitrates properly, but is nice to have everything in one place.

As everyone is already aware, hi-rez and CD should sound the same everything being equal. Some even admit they can't tell the difference between CD and compressed MP3. I love how HDTracks admits this in their description of compressed music when they say "Compression eliminates certain parts of songs that are outside the normal hearing range of a human being, and therefore unidentifiable by the listener".
