So where does it leave Classe amps?

My exposure to Classe is limited, mainly their older stuff. What I've heard of the new stuff is very nice, very smooth.

Since I have the Marantz & McIntosh, what type/brand of external crossover would you recommend and how to actually use it? It may be a insane idea to even try but, like I said, I have both amps. I have a sub running as well.

Thanks for any comments.

P.S. System sounds good right now. Don't know until I try if it will get better or worse with this change up......

I personally, would not recommend mix and matching different brands of amps to drive different drivers of the same speaker. It would seem to me that it's possible that gain might be an issue, so your bass driver might be playing louder than tweeter or vice versa. To fix it you would need an active crossover - think mixing console, where you would adjust the volume prior coming from the pre to each amp. That's just extra wires, extra components, complexity and other factors all thrown in the mix. I'm not sure I would do it.

I was thinking before of an idea, of a more powerful amp for bass and less powerful amp from the same series for mids and highs. But now I'm not sure if in this setup with amps from same manufacturer, gain would be the same.

This is why the 402 doesn't take control of your woofers like the MA9-S2. The MA9's output impedance is about 0.1 ohms, giving far greater control and output current.
Tom, who cares about all that other stuff - when you get to be my age, about the only place you can find warm and romantic is with your McIntosh.

Take that impedance mess and stick it in your ear!

Well, I am not yet that age!!

However, the Marantz amps DO provide a grip on the bass that the MC402 could not. The Mac is wonderful on my JBL S/2600 speakers. I really liked the highs with the McIntosh-hence my inquiry for the Arrays.

Anybody know what I would need for the test????????

You will need an active crossover with variable gain for its outputs. It would be inserted between your preamp and poweramps. This will allow you to set the crossover fequency and match gain between the 402 and MA9S2.

You will need to determine if the internal crossover of your speakers can be bypassed or eliminated in order to by-amp.

Also, using amps from the same manufacturer won't guarantee equal gain, unless both amps are the same model.

Good luck: Tom D.

Picked up a pair of Marantx MA9S2 amps; and find them very transparent with an incredibly articulate bass presentation. My Dyn C2's seem to match well.
