McIntosh surely did a very poor job of communicating what exactly they stuffed in the chassis. When Stereophile reviewed the preamp, the reviewer brought that to everyone's attention and the truth of what's inside has been cloaked in mystery since. I communicated directly with Ortofon and learned the specifics. According to they, the internal SUT was designed to work optimally with their higher end cartridges - compatible currently available cartridges would include Cadenza Black, Per Windfield, A90, Anna, SPU, etc.

An update of sorts. My production manager used to do board level repair work at Rockford Fosgate in the '90s. He did a fine job resoldering the RCA connector. We plugged it back in, fired it up, and were rewarded with music!
However, this was short lived. I only made it about three songs into an LP before the sound became quite distorted. As the distortion increases, the volume decreases to the point at which you can no longer hear the audio. We removed the SUT again, checked our work, and back into the chassis. Again, the same thing. So, there is something else going on as well. Likely a component which is drifting with heat. Oh well. So, the preamp will require some bench time to rectify this. Good thing it's not the heart of my 2ch/Atmos system . . . oh wait, it is. FWIW, wow does this thing sound sweet with the PW. Just unbelievably easy to listen to. So it goes . . . |
