Grand Tour
Korneel Bernolet
, harpsichord Joannes Daniel Dulcken 1747
Ramée
Qobuz 24/96

I just had a lovely video chat with the one and only creator of this fantastic thread, Julian.
It was so nice talking to you my friend!

Especially for you, your favourite instrument! (Not! ).

This is really a marvellously sounding harpsichord.
With a history.

Pieces from Händel, Forqueray and Boutmy.

"The harpsichord maker of the greatest eminence ... was Joannes Daniel Dulcken". With this quote from Charles Burney, Dulcken stands as one of the most important Flemish harpsichord makers of the 18th century in the tradition of the Ruckers-Couchet dynasty of the previous century. This recording explores the sound of the magnificent single-manual Dulcken harpsichord from 1747, now in the collection of the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp on permanent loan at the Museum Vleeshuis.

Korneel Bernolet proposes an imaginary Grand Tour of the year 1747, with music written in or around the year the instrument was built; as if a Flemish harpsichordist of the time put some first publications of foreign works on the music stand of the Antwerp harpsichord and started to play. © Ramée

Mare Balticum Vol. 4
Pomerania - Music from northern Germany and Poland (14th - 15th century
Ensemble Peregrina, Agnieszka Budzińska-Bennett
Qobuz 24/96

Splendid.
Tranquillity, peace, and calmness.

The fourth and final recording of Agnieszka Budzinska-Bennett's "Mare Balticum" project with and about music from the Baltic region, the first of which has already received the ICMA, is perhaps the most beautiful. One-part melodies sung by four women in their own rhythm and yet in complete unison transport us to the bygone world of the Middle Ages. Solo songs bring us even closer to that time. For instance, when - this is just one example - Lorenza Donadini as Mary laments the death of Jesus, we hear the grief of a living mother over the death of her own child. What a pity that this excursion into the past lasts only 79 minutes ! © Tacet

Hypnos
La Tempête
, Simon-Pierre Bestion
Qobuz 24/96

This album is indeed hypnotising.
Very beautiful pieces, brought in a terrific way.
The sound is very transparent.

Hypnos, God of Sleep.
Simon-Pierre Bestion’s recordings are often inspired by his desire to recreate a ritual. His aim here was to recreate a Requiem service, "the ceremony that accompanies the passage of a human being into the hereafter, while supporting the feelings of all who witness it. Making use of all the freedom that this act of re-creation afforded me, I constructed this programme without boundaries between repertories or different musical aesthetics – from the Middle Ages through the Renaissance to the twentieth century – selecting the works for their captivating musical material, their hypnotic and meditative dimension".

Intonations from Byzantine chant sit alongside guttural voices in Giacinto Scelsi and the English vocal style of John Tavener; Franco-Flemish Renaissance polyphony encounters the influences of eastern or western spiritual traditions present in the contemporary works. © Alpha Classics

Telemann - Viola Concertos - Overtures - Fantasias
Antoine Tamestit
Akademie Für Alte Musik Berlin
Sabine Fehlandt / Bernhard Forck
Qobuz 24/96

Some marvellous pieces, some mediocre ones.
I'm not that impressed overall, although Tamestit and his gang play well.
