I will checkout the Soundsmith Zephyr Star also I wasn’t thinking to upgrade the arm so maybe this is too much cartridge for the MT5? Well I may be going down a rabbit hole

Ivan is not only a SoundSmith Dealer, he also has other cartridge lines you could also consider.
I'm a fan of the Ortofon 'house sound' (which Ivan may rep) and their Quintet Black is competitive in $$ with the Songbird. Am also a fan of the Audio Technica 'house sound' (I have a few of both Ortofon & AT carts) and their AT-OC9XSL gets excellent reviews and is slightly less than a Songbird. Ivan also carries Grado, which are excellent cartridges, and, like your McIntosh, made in NY, USA. The Grado Master 3 is in the Songbird's $$ ballpark and well regarded. One thing about going with the Songbird is you will be sticking with the Sumiko 'house sound', which will be familiar.

Oh dang there are a lot of good options here. Thanks! I have been really happy with the MT5 so that’s why I was thinking Sumiko but I’m opened to anything. Grado and Soundsmith has me interested

jfray, I own the big brother, MT10. Still using stock cart but have come close to pulling trigger. I believe you can take your MT5 cart as far up the line as your checkbook allows. I know of one MT10 owner who replaced cart with Soundsmith Sussurro and his only regret is he didn’t go for the top shelf Hyperion. I’ve spoken directly with Peter Ledermann and he says no problem mating his carts with Clearaudio tonearms including those on the MT5/MT10, likely the exact same tonearm on both tables. I’ve strongly considered Soundsmith Hyperion, Grado Aeon/Epoch, and Clearaudio Jubilee MC for my MT10 but analysis paralysis has stopped me up to this point. So hard to drop the cash without benefit of hearing! Let us know which direction you go. Jason
