No mode selector and no loudness control and that coaxial balance control is not to my liking. If I were going to have a tube pre-amp it would be a Frank Gow C-2200. I know there isn't a MC input, but thats why I have a MP100. Oops none of them have Graphic tone controls! I guess I'm stuck with my C-34.

I currently have a mp1100 going into a MA5200.
Small modest apartment. Only play vinyl. Harbeth 30.1 speakers.
I am interested in going with tube amp.
Would the C22 and a mc275 be an improvement to current set-up?
How good is the phono stage in the C22 compared to MP1100?
Thanks

No disrespect to the MA5200, but I think you're right that a C22/MC275 combo would be a significant improvement. The sound will be fuller, warmer, more organic.

But I would hold onto the MP1100, at least until you can compare head to head. At $8K for just the phone stage, I'm guessing it's a step above the C22's.

Do you have a dealer able to loan you items for a home demo? Or maybe a Best Buy? My ears aren't yours

The MA5200 is a nice sounding integrated, but I agree with PeterMusic, the C22/MC275 combo will be an improvement. Just an FYI, the C22 IV phono stage signal to noise is quite a bit better than the C22 V phono stage. The C22 V phono stage signal to noise is 75db for both MM and MC and the C22 IV phono stage signal to noise is 80db for both MM and MC. If you’re into vinyl, you might consider finding a used C22 IV.

Thumbs up

Just a got one today and since I set it up I haven’t gotten much else done, but then again that was part of the idea. I’m really liking this preamp.
