Default Upscale Audio Appears to be Dropping Tannoy

Upscale Audio has added Fyne speakers to their list of stocking products.

And they appear to be closing out Tannoy speakers.

Anyone know for sure, and why?

Kevin did end his relationship once he became aware Tannoys' not being particularly transparent about their Chinese production & no longer built in Coatbridge (it closed and was demolished).

https://youtu.be/6Bpxbfl2bYI

My understanding is the cabinetry is made in Poland. From their website:

From there website:-

https://diora.swidnica.pl/produkty/

"Since 2021, the modern machine park has been enriched with an electronics installation department and professional listening chambers, which enable acoustic tests of loudspeakers. The company has expanded its range of services to include complete assembly of products as part of the production of private labels for well-known players in the audio market.

As part of the service, we offer full support in the field of product packaging, so that the customer can receive the loudspeakers in the final packaging from our warehouses."

I think the other reason is that, after the change of "ownership" at Tannoy, a lot of the engineers left Tannoy to join Fyne Audio.

There's also been a lot of "chatter" on the interwebs about the whole change of "ownership/leadership" thang as well as Tannoy production being moved from the UK to China, though Bob is correct that most of all the Tannoy cabinetry production is actually at Diora in Poland (AFAIK, all but the least expensive little "desktop" Tannoy).

This excerpt was provided by Adam (Username "Elberoth2" on Audigon, who builds really nice Roon Nucleus clones) who actually visited Diora in-person on Feb. 29th. Adam also lives in Poland.

From Adam:
"Tannoy speakers have been built by Diora - which is the biggest cabinet supplier in EU - for at least the last 15 years (maybe even more). They are build on the same floor as speakers from Gryphon, Marten Design, Elac, Dynaudio, Focal, Triangle, Piega, Burmester, Quadral, Canton, Fyne Audio and many more.

Diora is anything but a "garage" - it is a very modern factory with 150+ ppl employed, built in 2014 (the company itself has been making cabinets since 1977)."

About the Company – Diora: https://diora.swidnica.pl/about-the-comany/?lang=en

Here's photo Adam took at Diora documenting that...

That "chatter" in the other forum lit more than a few fires and flared sideways intensely quick.

A comment in the interests of accuracy: a lot in these other discussion forums has been about where the Tannoys were being made, specifically, UK or China. The facts of the matter are, it does not matter where a product is made, only...how.

In engineering terms, the the speaker is only performing a transfer function: it is taking electrical signals from the amplifier and performing a transfer function of the "electrical signals" into mechanical energy; i.e., the motion of the drivers in the speakers. As such, from a physics perspective, all a loudspeaker is doing is...pressurizing the air in the room. Nothing more.

Thus, the "music" is not being created by the loudspeaker. The perception of a sequence and series of tones, which we call "music" is a construct of our brains. This understanding and knowledge is the key foundation for the science of Psychoacoustics. This is also why some folks with certain types of head or brain injuries that are tone-deaf cannot hear "music" in the way a normal person would.

Transfer functions (and again, all the loudspeaker is doing is performing a transfer function) are not influenced by the geographic location of WHERE a product is assembled, but rather HOW effectively the Control Factors specified by the Engineering Design can mediate the TRANSFER FUNCTION (aka, the functional response) while being robust to the influence of Noise Factors (e.g. mfg. variance, materials variance, part-to-part variance, etc.). This is also why good engineers do...DOEs (Design of Experiments).

A textbook of example of this is the only country that screwed up manufacturing Honda automobiles was Britain, with the disastrous Sterling automobile brand "venture". A case-history of what NOT to do.

QUALITY is NOT the result of WHERE products are made; it's the result of HOW they are made, and physics is also not constrained by geography, it works the same way, everywhere in the Universe.

Cheers.

Yep. Whatever...

I view all that rom a more philosophical perspective, specifically, the priniciples of Stoicism. Here's some appropriate quotes from Marcus Aurelius:

"It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than other people, but care more about their opinion than our own."

and...

“Tranquility… comes when you stop caring what they say. Or think, or do. Only what you do.”

Cheers, gents.

Sorry, but it definitely matters to me where my gear is made. I don't support countries that steal trade secrets, counterfeit goods, oppress their citizens, etc., etc., if I can avoid it. I support free countries, like ours.
