Hmmm... I didn't bother with the GN8S's on my Freya as I "assumed" that Schiit offered the Tung Sols and an "upgrade" because they sounded better? Anyway, it took them (Tung Sol 6N7's) a LONG time to break in (burn in) but they are sounding nice now. I may have to try those coin base Sylvania 6N7's! Thanks for the info.

There are some reports that the coin-base 6SN7 are highly microphonic. But there are several stories out there about tubes which don't hold up to close scrutiny. For example, many people hold the red base 5692 up as a premium 6SN7 and outrageous prices are paid for them. However for audio applications, they are a very mediocre tube. Likewise people pay a premium to get the VT-231 "military" version of a 6SN7. There is nothing different about a VT-231, manufacturers simply relabeled them so as to be compatible with military inventory standards.

As always, my ying may be your yang. I've never found the high$$ tubes to be worth the money (some of the Tels, Bugle Boys, etc.). Have been able to find very nice sounding tubes at reasonable cost. To my ears, the GL labeled modern tubes sound good. Too bad they don't offer a 6SN7.

About two months ago I "gave in" and ordered some 1953 vintage GE 6SN7GTA's for Freya's driver stage - wow what a difference: warmer, more 3D, punchier. So I then ordered a set of early 60's GE 6SN7GTB's and put them in the buffer section of Freya and again - things got a little sweeter and more 3D. So .... I'm now NOS tubes convert. The GE's absolutely trounce the new production Tung Sol "upgrade" tubes from Schiit.

Have been "surfing around" looking for a preamp to go with my newly refurbished Kenwood L-07M mono-block amps and see that the Freya has been 'up-graded' to the FreyaS (solid-state/passive $599) or the Freya+ (tubes/SS/passive $899). While I've found the previous Schitt I've owned to be 'good' rather than 'great', am thinking I would rather give the Freya+ a try (with a 15-day return policy & 5yr warranty) as opposed to going with something used for considerably more and the possibility of problems. A real "+" for me is the fact I have a couple of dozen 6SN7s of various flavors and is one of my favorite tubes.

Placed an order for a Freya S (solid state only) a couple of days ago and looking forward to receiving it.

The amp in our main system died and I will be using my trusty old NAD 320BEE with the Freya S. I can’t wait to try the volume control; From the pics out there it looks sweet.

I would appreciate any listening impressions/observations from Freya S owners. TIA

Cheers,

Scott

Freya S has finally arrived; Took ten days to get here. FedEx was not on their game. Really cold out today, so I’ll give it a couple hours to warm up.

Schiit uses excellent packaging and the build quality is very good. I’m impressed so far.

Really looking forward to hearing what it does.

Cheers,

Scott

I'll be interested in reading your impressions of it.

Here’s couple quick impressions. My Freya is the “S” that has a solid state output (no tubes). So, it’s been on for a bit over 24 hours. A bunch of internet radio and selections from the music library along with 4 episodes of Monk have been run through it. The interconnect for the output of the Freya S has been sitting dormant for a number of years so I’m sure it’s going through some settling in itself.

So far I’m pleased. The Freya S started opening up and blooming a bit a couple hours ago. Many things are an improvement over the pre section of the NAD C320BEE. There is excellent detail, tone and timbre and very good dynamics. The micro detail and ambient retrieval is great and music sounds very natural.

The C320BEE on its own has a bit weightier, slightly warmer and a slightly bigger sound to it and the music is a bit more artificial and mechanical. There is a slight veil and graininess to it. The Freya S on the other hand is smooth and refined. Brass and cymbals sound real and less splashy and more like brass. The one reservation I have at this early stage is that I want the Freya to open up a bit more and flesh out a bit from the lower mids through the bass.

I am impressed with the build quality and look of the Freya. It’s very well made. The relay switch volume control is excellent, just excellent. Perfect tracking and such fine adjustments to get the perfect volume you desire. Of course it has those infamous clicks people talk about. I happen to love it but my wife and daughters are not fans.:-)

I’ll add some more impressions after the Freya S has had a few more days of settling in.

Cheers,

Scott
