A bit of Mono:
Tchaikovsky
Symphony #4
Boston Symphony
Pierre Monteux conducting
Nice recording if a bit thin in spots.
RCA Victor LM-2369 (1960)
Regards,
Jim

I love the 4th - quintessential Tchaikovsky: rambunctious, melodic and dynamic, he makes use of the entire orchestral panoply - a real listeners' treat. Enjoy those beautiful pizzacato violins in the third movement along with the most feared piccolo solo ever written! Try Telarc 10047 with Loren Maazel and the Cleveland Symphony - nothing thin here!

A bit late this year, but a necessity around Eastern...

Very nice version, visually as well as artistically and sonically.

Mendelssohn Complete String Quartets
Talich Quartet
La Dolce Volta 2012

This morning on disc 3 of 3, op. 80 & 81.

Originally issued on the Calliope label in the early '00s, this very fine remaster sounds excellent, and the performances are wonderful. If you like Mendelssohn's quartets, this is a set to have.

Default Philippe Herreweghe turns 70 today! Happy birthday.

Roland de Lassus - Cantiones Sacrae - sex vocum
Collegium Vocale, Philippe Herreweghe

We do celebrate him here in Belgium, in the newspapers, and on the radio, with 2 days of interviews, lots of music and a live concert tonight.
He's one of the really great conductors, and he's a medical doctor too (psychiatrist).
Gramophone Magazine says his version of the Saint Matthew's Passion (Bach) is the best one ever.

He was kind of a pioneer also, in the seventies, with undiscovered music then.
This disc is an example of polyphonic treasures he dug up.

Today I played this...

Beethoven:
Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67
Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 'Pastoral'
Chamber Orchestra of Basel, Giovanni Antonini

I think these forces are underappreciated and produce a very satisfying Beethoven sound. These performances swing with a good sense of rhythm. It's a chamber orchestra, but it packs a punch for the 5th's last movement and 6th's storm. The recorded sound is sharp and detailed. I'm going to try their performance of the 7th and 8th symphonies.

Is this on SACD?

The answer for the 5th and 6th disc is NOT an SACD. But their previous effort for the Beethoven cycle (Eroica & #4) was an SACD.

That Eroica is a blistering account that ranks as one of the best in my opinion. I have it too. See below...

Here is a post I made about this recording

Who are these guys? That was my first thought when I saw the recommendation for this disc. Listening to it you can see why Gramophone in its 2011 Classical Music Guide selected Antonini's recording as its top recommendations for the Eroica. That's saying something.

This is an intense period reading that "glows white in the furnace" as the review says. I really like this disc and I recommend it to all Beethoven lovers. Antonini along with Harnoncourt, Savall, Zinman and Immerseel are my top picks for my beloved Eroica.

The Sony SACD recording (one their last DSD efforts) is splendid.
