While this is the first 55-inch screen to see, OLED was getting the right attention last year at CES (for the real people - not the fad-watchers that flocked to all the 3D crap). OLED was first introduced long ago, though.
We should be seeing this set ship by Q3-Q4 with MSRP >$5k (but not by much). As Dan mentioned, his guess is quite educated - it will take a couple of years for this to finally go mainstream (since production capacity has jumped), and we should see a drop in the prices soon enough. Going 4K res on these screens should be relatively easy, too.

LG has been developing this technology for sometime now. I first heard about it almost 10 years ago while working alongside some LG display engineers. It's amazing how much R&D and time goes into something before it hit the mass commercial markets.

Knowing LG's track record, I'll be surprised it they ship this unit by volume in 2012. But I want it, so please hurry up Throw in 4K resolution while they're at it too.

I will wait a few years also. Why pay $8,000 for a OLED that will only last for about 3 years

You mean it'll stop working after 3 years?

Slightly different design, but sexy nonetheless. |
