I’m a fan of the Sonictransporter from Small Green Computer. It’s a dedicated device than comes with Roon preinstalled, is Linux-based and simple to use.

EDIT - tried to download Windows and it does not do so (at least for me on my Linux/Firefox NUC). Last try will be my verbal appointment with Microsoft next Wed. If that doesn't work I'll have to decide between a Mac & a NUC from Roon. Unless, of course, someone here has a better solution. Thanks, and hope I'm not thread-robbing the OP.

The SonicTransporter i5 is $1095 if you don't need to store you music on it. A couple of questions Glenn:
What are the specs of your NUC? processor and ram How are you storing your music, on the NUC or a separate USB device, NAS, etc.?

To answer your questions, I've installed a 4TB SSD in my Hifi Rose RS150 and have an external HDD as backup. My NUC is fully loaded (16GB of Ram, 500GB of SSD and have forgotten what HDD is. But it runs fine. Thanks.

Good news. With those specs there's no reason Roon shouldn't load on your NUC.

Thanks. Heading out in the morning to visit our grandson at college. Should know sometime Monday about his success (or not). He is a "Linux person", so hoping for the best.

There are lots of options. Basically, your are trading money for convenience. More money = more convenience and less learning curve on your part.
Do you have an extensive (digital) music library or is that in your plans? Will you access it from more than one location? These are the basic questions to get started. I have always run Roon from a NAS where the music library is also stored, Very stable.

Something I'd consider is getting an Akasa-cased NUC Roon Core (running ROCK) from Adam (known as Elberoth) on AG. I've email him about these products and he's very experienced and can do even more sophisticated builds than the one shown here: https://www.audiogon.com/listings/li...-servers-docks I wouldn't get a Mac Mini to run Roon as it is quite a bit noisier than the Akasa NUC I've linked above. I've been using a Mac Mini since first getting Roon years back, and I was fairly shocked at how much quieter and better the system sounded when I installed Alita (my own Akasa NUC Roon core), shown here: As I understand it, the Akasa NUC Roon server I've linked to above from Adam comes pre-installed with ROCK; all you do is log into it with your Roon account and you're up and running. Hope this helps, -Stephen

Stephen - thanks for the link. If my guy can't get my NUC going I'll get in touch with him.

I might have missed it, but are you running anything on your Nuc besides Roon? I have a nuc with nothing on it but Roon Rock and it is bullet-proof. I have the nuc connected to a switch (an EtherRegen, actually), and I have my BDP-3 connected to the switch as well. If you are familiar with EtherRegen, The nuc is connected to the A-side and the Bryston is connected to the B-side. The A-side is connected to my LAN jack and back to my router. I also have a Synology NAS connected to my router (in a remote room with my cable modem, UPS, etc.). The nuc runs Roon Rock headless. It is simple, sounds great, and importantly, it just works. Roon provides pretty straightforward instructions for installation. I don’t mess around with upsampling on the nuc (e.g., HQPlayer) or anything else- just Roon Rock. My music library is on the Synology (and I also have a 4 gb ssd inside the Bryston), and I stream Qobuz. Simple, straightforward, works and sounds great. Roon goes back and forth between Qobuz and the Synology seemlessly like they are a single device. The only catch is to do it my way you have to commit the nuc to Roon Rock and nothing else. I very recently made some changes to the A-side of the ER that were very positive that I will mention in a separate post (added fiber) but that doesn’t change anythingI discussed above.
