I would love to see a monolithic type speaker, something massive like the old Matrix 800. Maybe even a bit taller.
I remember when the Matrix 800 was released. Here in Toronto a few folks were invited to listen to them for the very first time. The audio shop had a full Krell system driving them. Truly impressive!

I have avoided scratching the speaker upgrade itch since N802. I guess I'm a Luddite. Maybe D4 will change my mind, but honestly, I usually see and hear more tailoring of both sound and packaging than improvement. If I'm not mistaken, there are several world class facilities (Deutsche Grammophon for example) still using Matrix and N generation. Maybe they can't afford to upgrade?

I have a pair of Matrix 801, several Nautilus 800 series, going on close to 20 with my N802s and also the latest 800 D3. I love them all for different reasons.

In my opinion, the nicest sounding iteration has been the original 800/802D ...the tweeter had a syrupy character ...often wonder if I should have just bought a used pair of 802D instead of these 805D3 lol

I would genuinely be interested in reading your thoughts on how you believe the product line has evolved over time.

Because you have lived with so many product generations at the same time, you are uniquely qualified to comment on how the line has changed over time. Your experience is far different than many owners who have owned different generations, one generation at a time. I've read lots of comments about tweeters and kevlar and diamonds and continuum, but never a post by someone who has them all -- and what are the pros and cons by generation. The generational naming thread came close, but I don't recall discussion of what each generation worth owning.

If you decided to post your generational observations of the pros and cons, my guess is many -- including me -- would be very interested in reading. I'll stock up on popcorn, just in case you do!

I too am interested in reading such a disquisition. I owned and greatly enjoyed the Matrix 801 S3 for 20 years, moving to the 802D3 in 2015. I think that the D3 sounds better in my room than did the 801s, but I cannot tell you why or in what manner with confidence, since I sold the old brutes immediately after setting up the new speakers. I always recommend used Matrix 801s to friends who are interested in great sound for little money.

Had the 802d2 then swapped the 802d3 in. Also had them side by side. Easy to tell which is which.

I owned the original N802's for around 8 years when they first came out and then traded them for 802D2 which I had for around 5 years and now 802D3 which I have had for over 4 years.

Every move has been a significant improvement, but without a doubt to me the 802D3 was the biggest improvement of all.
