Hearing works that one is very familiar with in one guise (the original) transformed in to something new by orchestrating them brings out new textures. Does not make the work better, at best they become slightly different with out loosing its original powers (compare with what has been done to noumerous Bach works). As with many of the Shostakovich works that have been dressed in different clothes (fx. several string quartets) these are quite worth wile. They have become lovely small concertini on their own right!

Very nice play and wonderful phrasing. Since I was listening via my trusty Discman and JVC Marshmallow ear buds, I will review the sonics tonight when I check out Symphonie No.2 on the main rig.

This 2 CD set is a HDCD offering, and the sonics are quite good, not up to the best SACD presentations, but very very good.

Olivier Latry - Organ
Philadelphia Orchestra - Christoph Eschenbach, Conductor

This is one of those "you've gotta get this one" sonic spectaculars. It certainly is that, and more. The performance by the Philadelphia is excellent, the brand new Verizon Hall organ, played by Oliver Latry, is huge and spacious. Imaging is "spot on" and the sound stage is immense.

An excellent recording and well worth owning.

A lot of Dvorák's music has this special thing that touches me deeply. These pieces have that.

In my last post, I referred to a "Six Eye" Columbia Stereo Recording.

Just FYI - here is a six eye label - these labels were used by Columbia records from 1958-1962, and these early stereo recordings competed favorably with the RCA Living Stereo, London Blue Backs, and Mercury Living Presence LP's both in performance and sound quality.

Note the "six eyes" - three on each side.

Interesting Julian. These records date from just before my existence and I've seen some of them during my childhood.
