Great choice for waiting room play. And, yes, I like Haydn too, I use it at night instead of a sleeping pill.

A rather pricey bit of vinyl ($35), but it sounds great, and of course Richter's playing is nonpareil.

Jean Barrière - Sonates pour le violoncelle avec la basse continüe
Les Basses Réunies, Bruno Cocset Winding down after a terrific concert with the Budapest Festival Orchestra. Mozart and Mendelssohn, with Maria João Pires in splendid form playing 'Jeune Homme' (Piano Concerto No. 9) - she's still one of the greatest piano players alive! This album is another home run for this ensemble. Very nice baroque, the double bass adds to the experience. Alpha offers as always a brilliant recording.

More over-priced ($65 for the 2 LPs--a Speaker Corner remaster)) but beautifully played and recorded vinyl. I think I want to upgrade my turntable rig now!

Mahler - Symphony no. I ('Titan') in D major
Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer Going through my Mahler symphonies again. What a special musical world he created. And how wonderfully Fischer brings it to life.

Mahler - Symphony no. 2 in c minor
Budapest Festival Orchestra, Iván Fischer The Hungarian Radio Choir A 2-SACD set that has been reviewed here a lot. What could I possibly add to the insights of buffs like Julian?! I like the second even more than the 1st. Channel Classics remains one of my favourite labels.

Definitely, Bart. I cannot think of a more satisfying recording than this 2nd from Fischer and Channel Classics. The music-making and dynamic range are astounding. A must for all music lovers and/or audiophiles. |

Beethoven: Symphony No. 6, 'Pastoral'
In the meantime I'm enjoying gentle sounds on quiet Sunday morning...
Beethoven: Symphony No. 6 in F major, Op. 68 'Pastoral' Budapest Festival Orchestra, Ivan Fischer Just gorgeous. The solo violin after the storm during the Allegretto ("Hirtengesang, Woltätige, Mit Dank An Die Gottheit Verbundene Gefuhle Nach Dem Sturm") is a very nice touch. Ravel: Piano Concerto in G; Rachmaninov: Piano Concerto No. 4
Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, piano Philharmonia Orchestra, Ettori Gracis conducting EMI remastered in 2000 Excellent performances, and the sound of the remaster is pretty good as well, although a bit bright at times, but with excellent dynamics and imaging.
