This morning a new discovery for me:
Joseph Martin Kraus - Symphonies
Concerto Köln, Werner Ehrhardt conducting

I had never heard of Kraus until yesterday when I read a review in an email newsletter (I think it was Classics Today). Kraus was a contemporary of Mozart, born in Germany in the same year and moved to Sweden, where he died at about the same age as Mozart. These are very nice pieces, well structured and engaging. The Concerto Köln is also new to me, and an equally pleasant discovery. Excellent sound as well as playing.

Marvelous, marvelous, marvelous - I love this music and these performances. The complete 4 disc set on SACD by Pentatone, remastered from 1970's Philips Quadro recordings is sheer perfection and is my very favorite of all the many recordings of this music. The performances are perfection and the sound quality is excellent.

Bart and I have spoken of this series many times here on AA and I, personally, can't get enough of them. Play 'em over and over!

I recently heard a live concert with organ concertos of Händel.
Played on a clavi-organum + chamber ensemble.

You can play organ on it and harpsichord, and a mixture of it.
The works were perfectly executed that evening, and a live event is always better than an album you would think.
Well it was good, but nowhere near as good as our Chorzempa discs!
It wasn't touching said my wife, and that was exactly my feeling too.
Chorzempa does touch my heart and soul, and that is what music should do.

Modest Mussorgsky - Pictures at an Exhibition
Robert Schumann - Fantasie Op. 17
Paul Lewis, piano

I heard this on our classical radio station last Saturday.
I was in my car, and even under those circumstances, I found it was so well played, so moving, so powerful.
After the piece, there was a discussion of this new album in the studio, with a professional piano player.
He was so enthusiastic that he would have given it 6 stars, if more than 5 was allowed.
Then I came home, and my wife had also listened.
She was as impressed as I was.

And now I'm listening, and I know, this is gooooooood!
Sound is equally top notch.

Handel - Concerti Grossi Opus 6
The Avison Ensemble, conducted by Pavlo Beznosiuk
3 SACD-set

Every time I listen to these recordings, much lauded in this thread, I am amazed by the freshness Beznosiuk and the Avison ensemble breathe into Opus 6.
Marvelous!

A selection in Mono
Respighi
Fountains of Rome
Pines of Rome
Toscanini - NBC Symphony Orchestra
RCA LM-1768 (Shaded Dog)

Wonderful Vinyl mono presentation though a bit on the bright side. (ribbons down 2 db on the Maggies and it is wonderful)

Regards,
Jim

I have been working my way through Claira Haskil Edition of 17 CD's. Chaplin said he met 3 genius in his life: Einstein, Churchill & Claira Haskill.

On Decca.

Thank you for posting this Andy.
How is the recording quality?
These old mono recordings can be quite agreeable, but they can also be off-puttingly bad.
