Gungnir Multibit DAC Mini-review
With Dan pulling the trigger on the Yaggi and all the glowing reviews of the Gumby (Gungnir with multibit), I’m seriously considering sending my Gungnir to Schiit for the multibit update.
The only hesitation I have is that it won’t do DSD. My only source is the HAP-Z1ES and I have quite a few DSD albums. If I want to play a DSD file, I need to physically unplug the USB from the DAC and switch inputs on my C2300 to allow analog output of Sony. It’s kind of a PITA. The other choice I have is to either double up on all DSDs with Redbook CD, or abandon DSD all together. I haven’t used the DAC with the Sony because of the lack of DSD support, so I really have no idea how it’ll compare to the Sony’s analog output. Thus far, I’ve only verified that the USB output is functional after Sony added that feature a few firmware releases ago - that was with a cheap printer USB cable. I decided to give it a go once again, so I ordered a Wireworld USB cable from Ivan. I’ll resign myself to only listen to non-DSD for the next few days and see how I like the Gungnir, sans-multibit in comparison. Who knows, maybe I’ll send it in for the multibit update and give up on DSD. |

I Gumbyed up before X-giving. While it opened up after the hours people said, to me it didn’t really smooth out for 3 weeks (pretty constant play).
Now I crank the volume higher, I listen longer, and, I decided to trade in my MEN220 for a different toy. Hard decision— I love the way the MEN220 adds depth. But with the room treatment I added and different room arrangement, I’d rather hear the Gumby’s R2R over Delta Sigma and room correction. Still, I am going to miss the MEN220 (good thing I don’t have kids or I’d likely have a pair of MC2301s instead of them by now). |

Gungnir Multibit DAC Mini-review
My Yamaha sound bar for the TV annoys me now (not so good delta sigma implementation). Before Gumby, it was just there. Now it screeches.
I went through the trouble of hooking up a toslink repeater so I could feed the bar and the Gumby when I want to watch something with music. (Haven’t gotten to home theater yet, and with Dan’s Yggdrasil review...) Last edited by kubla36; 01-18-2018 at 12:03 AM. |
