SUBJECT: Bryston SP3 USB Upgrade May, 2017 Hi Folks, We are pleased to announce a “Factory” USB upgrade for our Bryston SP-3 Surround Processor. The current USB module supports STEREO PCM 48K/16BIT resolution. The new USB module will support PCM 192/24 as well as DSD Native/64/128. There are a few options depending on which main board your SP3 has and your requirement for PCM or DSD digital playback. 1. SP-3 with version 2 - 3 - 4 or 5 main circuit board can upgrade to STEREO plus SURROUND MODES PCM 192/24 ONLY for $600 2. SP-3 with version 2 - 3 or 4 main board can upgrade to STEREO plus SURROUND MODES PCM 192/24 as well as STEREO DSD for $1000 3. SP-3 with version 5 main board can upgrade to STEREO plus SURROUND MODES PCM 192/24 as well as STEREO plus SURROUND MODES DSD for $600 4. SP-3 with version 2/3 or 4 main board replaced with version 5 main board can be upgrade to STEREO plus SURROUND MODES PCM 192/24 as well as STEREO plus SURROUND MODES DSD for $1500 SP-3 Main Board PCM Listening Modes DSD Listening Modes 2 or 3 or 4 Version 2.0 - 2.1 - 5.1 - 7.1 2.0 Only 5 Version 2.0 - 2.1 - 5.1 - 7.1 2.0 - 2.1 - 5.1 - 7.1 NOTE: These updates ‘MUST’ be performed at the Factory. |

Hi Chessman
I am working on that. james |

So are are you saying that the SP3 can be upgraded to play 5.1 DSD through the USB?

Fantastic!
It works very well. I did not know about the Multichannel... I am very interested, but I think I have a very early SP3 version. I will have to contact you when I get black from my holidays in two weeks.

NO - it will decode Stereo DSD and allow you to use the SURROUND MODES. james |

1. Are the DACS in the SP3 capable of decoding a direct DSD stream directly without converting it to PCM?
2. What is the maximum sampling rate the DAC's can handle? |

1. Yes
2. Maximum DSD is 2x (128) DoP and 2x (128) Native. Maximum PCM is 192k 24-bits. Note that the PCM limitation is due to the main DSP board in the SP3 (DAE6D) not USBX. The XMOS chip can decode up to 768k PCM and up to DSD 4x but this is currently disabled because of the above considerations. Maximum DSD limit of "2x" is determined by the DAC chip in the USBX board. There is a separate 2 channel DAC chip in the USBX (XMOS) board that can candle DSD 1x and 2x, and PCM up to 192k/24 bits. The dac chip is similar (in terms of performance) to the one that the main DSP board in the SP3 (called DAE6D, by MDS) is using. When the USB source outputs PCM, it is routed digitally using the so called I2S bus, from the USBX to the DAE6D board and processed there, same as with the old USB board. When the USB source outputs DSD it is decoded by XMOS chip and sent to an on-board DAC chip (in the USBX board) and then sent as 2-channels analog signal to the main DSP board, using one of the extra cable, from the USBX to the DAE6D board and processed there as analog-to-analog to "surround" or "passthru".
