Brian........The Egglestone Andra III is a very interesting speaker, particularly the concept of a pair of isobarically loaded 12” Dynaudio woofers, one installed inside the cabinet behind the one woofer we see mounted on the cabinet's surface. That is an approach to deep bass reproduction from smaller enclosures that I was not aware of until reading this article.

Dan, like much of today's speaker technology, isobarik loading is nothing new. I think I first became aware of it over 20 years ago in some Linn speakers. More recently, the Totem Mani 2 has used it to good effect. I'm sure there are more and even older examples.

Great sounding loudspeakers and made in the birthplace of the blues and rock & roll

Kevin.......This is one of the things I truly enjoy about our hobby. There is always something new to learn. Thank you for providing additional examples.

Dan,

Back then in the mid to late eighties, the Linn Isobarik (both available in Passive and Active) and the Sara were using this format to 'enhance" their bass reproduction. I happen to own the Sara.

Cheers!

Hey Jerry you have a good taste,

The Sara is a terrible loudspeaker, still very sought after today....

Well, I was "Linn Crazy" back then. Had the then LP12 with Ittok arm, LK1 & LK280 bi-wiring the Rosewood veneered version of the Sara's with their matching stands. Unfortunately, I had to sell them off cause after a 2 years, the foam (very nicely sculptured akin to the JBL L100 ones) start to fall apart. If my memory serves me well, the baffle is a type of plastic moulded piece than the standard wooden type.

I would have gone to the aktiv version of the larger Linn Isobarik system if money was available then. There were a few classic British speakers I would have loved to own back then .... the Spendors BC3, The Gale GS401 (chrome end caps) etc, ..... Not that they sound good, but they were then the rave of the times with my hifi buddies back then. Well, except for me, they have all gone on to other hobbies.

I dont know if I really know what's "good taste" (even up to today) is, cause if I did, would I be still indulging in this musical change on gears? More likely I was (and still is) caught up in a change frenzy desire ... which had luckily stopped momentarily.

Cheers!

Having been an Andra II owner for the last 3+ years I can only agree with Jeff's assessment of the speakers overall. I've toiled with selling -- only to rethink the idea that those which I thought to upgrade to would be a sideways move & not upward at all. So, the Andras remain, which I'm actually quite thrilled with & is definitely not a weakness in my system (upgradeitis cured after coming to my wits).

Heard the III's at AXPONA in Jacksonville earlier this year -- but like most shows, the motel/hotel rooms don't do justice for many, many speakers.

Dynaudio themselves have used this approach, both in the past, and it is presently utilized in their Consequence UE Special Edition.

It also uses Dynaudio's superb Esotar tweeter, arguably the best dome tweeter made..
