If you stay with an MM your Bronze can be easily upgraded with the Black stylus.
So many excellent choices for MCs these days from sub-$1000 to $10,000+ that it almost makes ones head spin. Yamamato http://mockingbirddistribution.com/y...to-headshells/ makes excellent headshells.

I finally got around to taking some pics of my Technics SL1200G so here they are. Also, if you're familiar with the G model, you might notice that I changed out the feet. I picked up a set of new in the box OEM Technics feet that are for the older SL1200 turntables because I like the look of them much more than the new style feet that come with the SL1200G. Basically, the feet that come with the SL1200G are very plain looking with a smooth flat black finish and without the knurling and chrome trim ring that is found on the older style feet.

Your new TT is so capable well beyond the Ortofon 2M Red Cart. When funds allow I strongly suggest you move up to something more resolving in the MC category. There's a lot out there.

Technics SL1200 mk2
Here's a pic of one of the new style feet that came factory installed on the 1200G which I removed. That's not dust on it, they have a slight metal flake finish. The second pic is from the Technics website which shows the new style feet mounted on the turntable. See how plain they look? Just not to my liking which is why I installed the old style feet that have the knurled finish and chrome trim ring.

Very nice. How are you liking the 2M Bronze?

To be honest, thus far, it’s the only cartridge that I have tried with it so I have nothing to compare it to. That being said, I think that it sounds great with everything that I’ve thrown at it. The bass is deep yet clean and tight, the vocals are clear and articulate, and there isn’t any harshness to the highs. I’ll admit though that when I first setup the 1200G, I tried to mount the cartridge myself. When I tried listening to it for the first time, I found that it lacked a little something as compared to my older 1200 MK2 which got me freaked out and wondering why I had upgraded to the 1200G. That’s when I took the turntable down to Pearl Audio and had them adjust the cartridge which completely changed it and made it sound great. I wasn’t too far off with where I had it, but close just didn’t cut it. It just goes to show how important the setup is as well as how revealing our systems can be.

Amen to proper set-up. The good thing is you only need to do so once per cartridge.
Should you get the itch to 'upgrade' (inevitable in our sport) you can simply add one of the 2M Black styli (the standard or the newer LVB?). Or, purchase another headshell (I prefer Yamamoto, though there any number of others) and try a different 'flavor' of cartridge. Am a big fan of Ortofon's 'house-sound' for MCs, but find I prefer the Audio Technica MMs. Enjoy!!

I've been using a Dual 1019 idler as a secondary TT for 78s, but after spending obscene amounts of time researching the new 1200GR and Gs I decided to pick up an older 1200mk4 which is the only 1200 to have a 78rpm setting built in until this new line. The removable head shell was definitely a selling point as I also got an Ortofon mono cart I'd like to use for mono LPs and 45s. The G was just too much of an investment as a secondary TT so an older 1200 was the right move for me vs the GR (which I realize also supports 78). It'll be a bit until I get a chance to hook it up though. |
