Sounds like a great trip. All of Italy is wonderful, I especially like Sicily for its earthiness. I could probably live in Rome, but I'm shying away from big cities after 31 years in metro NYC area. My preference would be a hill town in southern France. Nothing to do, but I'm OK with that.
For my wife's 40th, we flew NY-Paris via Concorde, and took the Orient Express from Paris to Venice. Lovely trip, black tie dinner on the train at midnight, wake to the Alps early in the morning. Arrive in Venice, small launch to the Daneli, in the old part of the hotel, looking over the lagoon. Jumper flight back to Paris after a few days, to the Bristol, lunch at Grand Vefour, Concorde back to NYC arriving before we left.
These days, I travel more austerely, but have even more fun.
Europe is easy.

She's worth it. And I'm the spender, not her. Thank goodness. We'd be in big trouble if she had the same attitude toward money. But even I have gotten more penurious- as I explained to one of my friends who has real wealth (I'm a working stiff), he is rich enough not to have to spend money for self-gratification and ego. For me, I'd work my brains out and reward myself with things. I now have a much more relaxed attitude toward the whole thing since, at the end of the day, the 'stuff' is pretty meaningless.

Don't order peperoni pizza in Rome, much to my surprise mine came complete with green peppers which I am deathly allergic to. The waiter told me peperoni is their word for green pepper and peperoni (meat) must be an American thing.

And, beware of pick-pockets - I had my wallet lifted while I was taking pictures of the Colosseum. It was in my front pants pocket and I never felt a thing.

Fortunately, the thief only wanted the money and threw the wallet away.

A man from Texas found my wallet with the cards etc. intact and mailed it to me when he got back to the states!

Of course, I had already cancelled the "C" cards, but it was nice to get my drivers license, Costco & Sam's Cards, insurance cards, library card, etc. back.

It may have been invented in Italy (Naples), but I have never, ever had a good pizza in Italy (for lunch that is).

Best was with home made cheese (goats in the barn area) --- outside Stuttgart of all places and the proprieter looked and dressed identical to Roy Orbison. We called it "Roy's."

Best

We just arrived back from Istanbul Turkey and it was a fabulous trip! An 11.5 hour plan ride from IST to EWR, and 3.5 hours from EWR to IAH. Plus plenty of airport appreciation time, so lets say about 21 hours from leaving the ship to arriving at home to see our much missed puppies.

I will try to give a few details later and if I get a chance down load a few photos that I took.

I was warned about the picket pockets and fortunately for us it was not a issue.

Those long flights are pretty grueling. Where did you stay in Istanbul?

Same thing in Belgium. A pepperoni pizza is green peppers. If you want something similar to pepperoni you usually asked for salami.

You can get great pizza and bad pizza anywhere in the world. The only one I don't care for too much is those thick Chicago pizza's. Too much dough.
