Cool. If you don't want to ship it you are welcome to come over and compare your aurieges against mine for sound. I may be selling mine soon to buy a aurieges mm.

I partially answered this in an earlier post and I was going to post more information in the Personal Introductions forum, but realized that I can't start a thread until I have a few more posts under my belt. So I'll take advantage of this thread to get a bit more information out there.

I have been playing around with high end audio for 30 years, since I was in college, so I have accumulated lots of equipment over the years. I still have quite a few items tucked away in various closets that I occasionally pull out for rotation. I tend to favor vintage electronics, which can be tube or solid state. I have two main systems that I use day to day.

The Shindo Apetite is in the family room and runs with the Reference 3A speakers mentioned in the earlier post. I also feed it with a restored Kenwood KT-7500 tuner and a Squeezebox Touch for digital, driving various DACs. Right now I've got a homebrew DAC based on the Twisted Pair Buffalo kit. No vinyl in this system right now, but I'm thinking about restoring a Lenco turntable to use here.

I've also got some Horning Eufrodite speakers in the living room, which I drive with single ended amps - either 2A3 or VT-25. The VT-25 are from Sun Audio while the 2A3s are homebrew versions of the Baby Ongaku design. I'm driving this with a restored Threshold FET-10 preamp and a Pass Labs ONO phono stage. Turntable is a Thorens TD-524, which is a sister to the EMT938 - a very well regarded direct drive turntable.

Turned out my cabinet is the culprit. When I put the Aurieges on another surface, the hum is almost completely gone, only audible < 2 feet.

I tightened down all the screws on the bottom of the chassis, it helped a bit. Now the hum has decreased by about 20% or so when sitting on my cabinet. I'll have to live with that.

Thanks for all the recommendations and offers. They warmed my heart. Thanks Matt once again.

For those wanting to hear my humble system, please don't hesitate to contact me. Be warned, my power amp is mid-fi. I suspect it severely limits the potential of my Shindo components. Where is my CC80/CCQ? (hint to Matt).

A quick iPhone shot.

Tommy,
I don't know about the Aurieges, but on Apetite, it's not the screws on the bottom of the chassis that need to be tightened. One needs to take off the bottom chassis plate and then tighten down the screws that hold down the power transformer. These were the screws that got loose during shipping my amp. Just be careful when/if you take off the bottom cover. Make sure that you've unplugged the unit and given time for all the high voltage caps to discharge. It only takes a minute or two for the caps to discharge.

The other thing you can try is putting something that is soft/compliant between the Aurieges and the cabinet. Some soft feet might be the ticket to stop your preamp from shaking the cabinet. I've used sorbothane feet with a noisy turntable motor and Vibrapod feet on equipment in the past with good results.

Gary,

That is funny. I just bought an Apetite that will be in the living room and I will use it with a Squeeze Box for only digital playback !
What are those Reference 3A speakers ?
I'm thinking about DeVore Gibbon 3XL for the Apetite. Based on what Matt says on his web site and on the 6 moons Blue Moon Award. Will be a blind buying cause I would have to go to Netherlands or UK to listen to them.

Tommy,

I'm glad that you found the culprit.

I think the transformer is tightened down pretty well. The Aurieges has very low hum (almost none) when sitting on a carpet or bare marble floor. It's my cabinet. Like Matt said, the cabinet acts like a speaker amplifying the hum.

Having said that, I may try your solution one day.

Jerome,
I'm using the Reference 3A mm de capo i speakers. They are relatively efficient at 92db / 1W / 1m, so a good match for a modestly powered amp like the Apetite. Here is a link to the manufacturer's website:
Reference 3A Loudspeakers

Devore speakers are also really good and Matt has a lot of experience matchng different components. Besides the Gibbons, the O/96 and O/93 speakers look really interesting, depending upon your budget, both in dollars and space,
