Well I’m going to have to take back what I wrote above. Not all their masters are DSD256, some are DSD64. So, the new photo is still misleading.

Have at least a dozen MoFi releases. But, the newest one is at least 30yr old, so don't think I'll be bothered.

Most all the new releases I've been purchasing are from more boutique labels. Hopefully, they are being more transparent, though I've not checked.

Looks like the MOFI controversy has reached mainstream media at the Washington Post. Good article, worth the read.

Thanks for sharing (Post article). In depth.
So, the best (new) pressings may no longer be as rare or as exclusive. So something is lost and something is gained.

Well now it all makes sense. I have always been a huge MoFi fan, and I would guess I have at least 100 titles in my collection. I mostly choose a MoFi title when I want to show how good vinyl can sound to non-audiophiles, but do also enjoy Analogue Productions as well. That said, I often say that the older, original MoFi records from the 70’s and early 80’s sound better to me. I also have said that I thought it was because most of those were mastered by Stan Ricker, and if he did it, I’m going to love how it sounds. I guess that maybe wasn’t it, was it?

I hope through all this controversy that MoFi continues to release great sounding records. They have gone out of business once before, and I’d hate to see it happen again.

I think we collectively need to change our expectations regarding ‘Original Masters’ and MoFi coming clean will help in this regard.

The original master tapes of some of our audiophile fav’s are over 50 years old. They are deteriorating over time and will continue to do so. The sooner they can be restored and captured to DSD the better.

I think capturing them now in DSD is far superior to creating analog tape copies. I know analog tape is a beloved format, but it has some serious flaws that DSD does not have.

I agree with your 1st statement, but don't think there is any chance of that happening as MoFi is owned by Music Direct and is only about 20% of MD's total revenue. Besides, they have Michael Fremer and several other 'noted' vinylphiles on their side. As long as they do a good job they should be fine. This kerfuffle aside.

Yes, MoFi has responded with a "mia copa" several times and promises to be more transparent in the future.

Not sure what "The original master tapes of some of our audiophile DAC’s are over 50 years old." might be. Indeed, many, if not most of the original master tapes are getting on in years. To say nothing of the many that were burned in the not too distant past. But, don't understand your "audiophile DAC's".

Think MoFi has proved that DSD, done well, provides excellent sound.

BTW - I thought I would purchase a new MoFi so could listen for myself. MD (who owns MoFi) only had six (6) new LPs listed. None were anything I would spend my $$ on.

I really don't have much of a dog in this MoFi thing since I haven't purchased any of their records in years. I just think many customers are having a hard time getting over the lies. And that's what they are: Lies. Whether it has a long term effect on their business or whether it'll be just a bump in the road is anyone's guess.

I know that I will not be buying MoFi one steps unless I understand the provenance and mastering chain. This probably goes for all MoFi from now on.
