Question Keep Mclntosh C70 or go to C1100?

At first I thought next logical upgrade would be changing my MC312 to more power ( monoblocks ) or go to all tube power amplifier but seems I only use .30 to 3 watts on meters peaks at 30 watts even with inefficient Magnepan speakers as using 2 JL Audio subwoofers in stereo.

Thought of the Mclntosh C1100 but it has been in production since 2015.
Also not happy no bass or treble controls at all...

Already purchased D1109 digital preamplifier.

Would the C1100 actually be an improvement to my system?

Other concern is that keeping C70 better decision due to be anniversary model, more of collector’s item in future?

Thoughts, opinions appreciated

Dan

Why not try using the D1100 as the preamp without the C70?

I would ask the same question as Stahle. If you don’t need analog inputs, why not run the D1100 as the Pre? You would save yourself lots of cash and likely have improved resolution. The addition of another pre just to have it makes no sense.

Always thought of the McIntosh D1100 as Dac not preamp as purchased it after the McIntosh C70. Is output levels from D1100 good enough to drive power amplifier directly? Do not think output level in voltage be as high as dedicated preamp.

Default Keep Mclntosh C70 or go to C1100?

It is designed to be use as a DAC and or a Digital PreAmp. It has plenty of output voltage.

Just compared the specifications from the McIntosh C70 and you are correct it should have no issue driving power amplifier. I am using Cardas XLR connections.

Will have to look at sound quality differences as well.

I suspect you will find any additional preamp beyond adding functionality, will add color. You may or may not like that.

But I have found since I don’t need analog inputs, a digital preamp/DAC sounds fantastic. Albeit not with a McIntosh Pre/DAC.

Sounds like you need to be looking for different speakers.
