How Did You Discover McIntosh?

I had some dynaco gear that I built and needed a preamp. Bought a used HK citation I from a local hi-fi store. The store I purchased from sold Mac gear and I just fell in love with it the first time I heard it. I walked in ond day and they had a used MC2100. I traded an ST-70 in toward it and walked out with the 2100. That was in 1972 it was less than a year old. Within the next year I bought a C-28 and MR-73. Still have them to this day.

I played in a nightclub band from the ages of 17 - 22, our sax player had a complete McIntosh tube system and JBL speakers. I never forgot the sound of his system, but never thought I would ever be able to afford a Mac. Fast forward 45 years and I finally had the resources to start my Mac addiction purchasing a used integrated (cannot recall the model).

A few years ago i stopped into Audio Classics to look into a turntable. i had just gotten back on my feet so to speak and put together a small system of stuff i had from my younger years that i kept around. Some family members were busting my ass to get into vinyl. "its coming back around " they said. So, i stopped into A/C and talked about turntables. i picked up a pro ject essential 3 and after that all hell broke loose. I've been into hi fi audio my whole life, but this time it bit back really hard. I was always aware of McIntosh equipment, but felt it was just out of reach. i started with an MC2200 and then i was hooked, game over.

It was 1961 and I was working my first job in a small resort town so I bought a Knight Kit. Well after I got back home it failed of course and the repairs seemed to extensive so I went to a Dealer and bought a Scott integrated unit and they sold Mac. Well it worked for while but had numerous issues that I had gotten fixed and they had a Mcintosh Clinic so I took my Scott and it flunked badly So I bought a MA 230 and MR-67 and I have been a Mac owner ever since. Is the short Story. I just can't see throwing good money at something that does do what they say it should do. That goes for Marantz tube stuff too.

Back in the 70’s I was running the usual receiver based average system when I decided to upgrade. Someone sent me to a premier McIntosh dealer where I actually ended up buying a bi amped 3 way Pro JBL/McIntosh system suited to a club venue. Just loved that system. Not so much the people a few blocks down the street. Was seriously considering the MC 462 when I just ordered new driving electronics.

I’m not a McIntosh person, but do have a “discovery” story. In the mid 70s my parents moved into a big 1790s New England house. Tucked away in a closet in one of the many rooms, my dad found an old McIntosh receiver, I think a model 1500, non-functional. He didn’t know much about hifi and hadn’t heard of McIntosh. When he showed it to me, I told him McIntosh was a fairly high-end, respected brand, and since the previous home-owner had passed away and there were no heirs, he should see if he could get it fixed and use it. He took it to Tech HiFi in Cambridge (the original store, called “Tech” because it was started by MIT students). They told him they could fix it up for a couple hundred, or buy it or trade for it for the same. He traded it on the spot for a new Technics receiver (probably about $250) and came home happy.

And the people who sold the Technics will have been satisfied for sure.
