Broke my Triton
Last night I was playing the system at an obscene level when the power went off. At first I thought the breaker on the dedicated 20 amp circuit tripped, but it was okay. It turns out the Triton switched off. After turning it on, powering up everything else, it started buzzing, a really loud buzz. Prior to this, it was dead silent.
After troubleshooting this morning, I determined it is a load related issue. It only starts when both amps are on. Turn either off, and it stops. While half a stereo is better than no stereo, I can't live with that. The first thing I did was replace the Triton with a Panamax 5300, which has both a voltage and amp meter on it. After powering up the amps, it indicated they draw 7 amps at idle. Then I remembered I recently put a Hydra AV in my HT, so once again I went through the ordeal of swapping power conditioners, and the two channel is now using the AV, and the HT got its Panamax back. I emailed Shunyata customer service and hopefully can get the Triton sent back next week for repair. I think once I get a few extra dollars I will buy another Triton, and use one for the amps, and the other for everything else. This will provide me with a spare in case this happens again. Two channel gear which caused the issue. Pass Labs X600.5 amps (2) Pass Labs XP-20 pre-amp Bryston BDP1 digital file player Bryston BDA2 DAC Sony XA-5400ES SACD player Aerial Acoustics 7T speakers All cables are Shunyata Zytron models The music was rock, and the pre was in the 70s, but I didn't measure the SPL. It was loud, but sounded great. While disappointed, I realize that things break. At least I have the Hydra AV to fall back on, and this isn't as big a problem as when one of my previous amps broke. Wow! I wouldn't have guessed it would be the triton of all things that would break! Must have been absurdly loud. I'm sure Shunyata cs will take care of you, but the wait won't be fun.

I prefer to run the amps direct and everything else thru power conditioning.
PS. I hope your listening session wasn't that loud. You must protect those ears. Last edited by Still-One; 08-04-2013 at 08:15 AM. |

I agree with protecting your ears. I am fastidious about that. Even if I only go into the lab at work for a few seconds I wear a hearing protector. However, all that protection is so I can enjoy a few moments of loud on a Friday night. |

given your fine listing of equipment , IMO, your money is best spent in adding another dedicated line for your amps, the benefits of which will better the addition of another triton.

First I've read of a Triton failure. I'm sure Shunyata will take care of you.
BTW, I would not run the PASS X600.5s through the Triton. Best of luck, Mike

I should add here that the Triton still works, except for the annoyingly loud buzz. It will be interesting to know what is the problem. The Triton is a passive device so I wonder what could be buzzing.
After thinking about the second Triton, I think it will be perfect to have one amp and two components plugged into each one. That should keep the max current flow in each Triton evenly distributed. I did email Shunyata earlier, and on Monday we can fix this. The Hydra AV is filling in nicely. In fact, I really like how it fits in by being on the floor. Blue sorry to hear about the Triton... Those Pass beasties would ask a lot of a conditioner... Maybe a cyclops just for the amps might be worth considering as it was designed primarily for that purpose plus it'd work out cheaper.

Caelin,
I saw your message, but am unable to reply since I am not a subscriber. I emailed CS on Saturday, but realize I will not get a response until Monday. Once I get the return authorization I will send it in. Hopefully, it is something minor causing the buzzing. The Hydra AV is doing a great job standing in for the Triton. Bud |
