Beethoven - Piano ConcertosNos. 3 & 4 - Transcriptions for Piano and String Quintet by Vinzenz Lachner
Hanna Shybayeva, piano
Utrecht String Quartet
Luis Cabrera, double bass
via Qobuz

Interesting, but in this case I prefer the versions with full orchestra.

Louise Farrenc - Symphonies 1 & 3
Insula Orchestra, Laurence Equilbey
Qobuz 24/96

Presto Classical album of the week last Friday.
And well deserved.
A female composer who made me even think of Beethoven, who indeed was a source of inspiration for her.

Works from Bottesini, Koussevitzky, Schumann, Franck.
Cabrera makes his Landolfi sing like a cello, but it keeps the beautiful timbre of a high quality double bass.

I played him earlier today, and here he is again, even shining more than on the Beethoven album.

Thomas Sauer - Sovereign Lines
Qobuz 24/96

Old and new.
And it works!
Works from Thomas Adès, Chopin, Stephen Hartke, Hans Abrahamsen.

“It cannot be easy to write for solo piano: so many magnificent sounds of the 18th and 19th centuries abide in the ears of today’s pianists and concertgoers. By including some of his favorite Chopin miniatures alongside three major piano pieces from the 1990’s, Thomas Sauer could well stand accused of an all-too-common reluctance to break from the past. He prefers to treat with this vexed situation pragmatically, acknowledging the reality that most of his listeners will perceive the new refracted through the lens of the old, and that some will simply be more inclined to keep listening when given a dose of the familiar together with the strange. All three recent works recorded here bear some imprint of the pianistic past - each in a different way - and yet all three successfully outrun it. © Azica Records

24/96 download, with today's listening focused on the First and Fifteenth Symphonies. Trenchant interpretations that echo Nelsons' sterling earlier reading of the Shostakovich Tenth, with equally superb sonics.

Amazing Mono Vinyl, I prefer this to the Living Stereo SACD!

Playing the Living Stereo version of this. The performance is wonderful of course, but the sound on this version seems just a bit thin to me.

Nicola Benedetti - Baroque
Qobuz 24/96

Very energetic album.
Played with enthusiasm and vigour.
Works from Vivaldi and Geminiani (after Corelli).

Decca Classics is thrilled to announce a new Baroque album from violinist Nicola Benedetti. This is the first album she has released on a period set-up including gut strings, and she is joined by a leading group of freelance baroque musicians, forming the Benedetti Baroque Orchestra - for the very first time. The album features a selection of concerti by Vivaldi plus Geminiani’s incredible arrangement of Corelli’s La Folia, one of the oldest western classical themes which has been arranged by many composers over time, particularly in the baroque era. Geminiani was one of the greatest violinists of the era and Corelli was one of his teachers whilst growing up in Italy. Later when he moved to London, Geminiani reworked a number of Corelli’s works for local audiences including this arrangement of La Folia. © Decca Classics
