I received my unit and installed the firmware update. While the streamer is not broken in, it sounds great. It has opened up the central soundstage (as well as improving most other characteristics). My theory was that my previous streamer had noise... since it was in the center indicating it was coming through both channels and manifested itself in the center of the soundstage (unlike vinyl noice that comes randomly through the left and right channel so does not occur in the center). I am not talking about noise that you hear as a hsssss. But just not black silence. Finally uncongested central like my vinyl end.

I compared the Single AES with USB on my system (DAC: Sim Moon 650D with 820S power supply). I switched a couple times. I switched back to the AES both times quickly. I know from experience this indicates the AES sounds better... although it would take a lot of critical listening to figure out the details of the differences. That is not worth my time, I’ll just use the AES for now.

As always I was hoping the Ethernet cable would not make a difference. Theoretically it shouldn’t (how many times in the last 50 years I have said that... and it has never been right). But I am eternally the optimist. I have an WiFi extender plugged into an outlet next to my system... how could the last two meters matter? I upgraded from cheap Ethernet cord to a DH Labs 2 meter Ethernet cable. Instant significant improvement. Noise floor dropped further allowing more space around instruments. A more obvious difference than AES vs USB in my system (as must always be the qualification as everyone’s systems are different and each are complex system). Sometimes I just wish something wouldn’t matter. But it always does.

George, are you able to compare DSD to PCM over AES vs. native DSD over USB?

I probably can. But the WE20se triggered a major upgrade cycle. At this point I think I have upgraded almost all the boxes and the turntable. I had demo equipment for a couple months as the new equipment arrived and now is breaking in... and cabling. It is actually too bad I did not make the comparison on my old system with the Sim DAC and Pass x350 amp. That system I thought of as my “reference system”, it really highlighted differences in recording and mastering... just laid them bare. My new system is a order of magnitude better, it is overwhelmingly musical... the detail is there, but it is hard to concentrate on details. Overall, I find that differences in mastering and recording vastly out weigh the impact of the playback format. My system has great midrange bloom and rhythm and pace which really detracts from the detail of recording space... it is so involving it is hard to want to care about details... just for fun I have listened to hear a musician move his foot... it’s there, just listening I don’t care.
