Default Focal Sopra 1 or Focal Kanta 2

Hello all,

I know that one should listen, but I’m wondering if anyone has any thoughts about a Sopra 1 against a Kanta No. 2.

Is having the standmount the in the Sopra series “better” than the floorstander in the "lower" series?

Ancillaries are Simaudio Moon 600i and Squeezebox Touch through a DAC.

The Sopra 1 contains a bit more technology including its "W" cone mid-base driver, but I think you need to look at your listening space before making a decision between the two. The Sopra 1 is recommended for listening spaces270-550 square feet, has a sensitivity of 89dB, and frequency response of 45Hz-40kHz. Kanta 2 is recommended for spaces 320-750 square feet, has sensitivity of 91dB, and frequency response of 35Hz-40kHz. You'll definitely need a subwoofer with the Sopra's if you want true full range response and value deep bass. If your room is on the smaller side and you don't mind adding a good sub, the Sopra 1 is a no brainer. Its midrange performance can't be matched by the Kanta's.

Don’t know about midrange performance can’t be matched by the kanta.

The kanta has a dedicated midrange woofer

There are some exciting reviews with their tonal qualities on the web for the Kanta 2's and they are smaller and cost substantially less than the Sopra 2's. Hope they release a Kanta Center soon.

Kanta 2's have newer Focal technology compared to the Sopra 1's and you may be able to get by without a sub.................at least for a while. A sweeter sound is also reported with the Kanta 2's.

Just a general question for the forum - the Sopra 1s are well reviewed by the press and liked by audiophiles, but I mainly see only Sopra 2s.

Does anyone know how successful the Sopra 1 is?

I have not auditioned the Sopra 1 myself but here is one very positive review in the audio press: http://www.theabsolutesound.com/arti...cal-sopra-no1/.

Love my Sopra no. 1s in my 12 x 15’ listening room. Driving them with a Mark Levinson 585 and using an old Definitive Technology subwoofer. Sold my Wilson Audio Sophia Series 2s after hearing the Focals. Never looked back.
