New Cayman
Dropping off my son with his car for the annual service and we noticed the new Caymans on the lot and showroom floor. I walked in to say hello and to check them out. Of course I wanted to test drive it and I love when my Porsche sales guy says "the tank is full, enjoy yourself"...
Spent a few hours with the new Cayman with my son. Took turns driving on some back roads, ate lunch and drove some more before heading back to the dealership. The red Cayman we drove was the non "S" variant. Overall a great car, I was surprised at the new level of effort/stiffer clutch pedal, the higher effort of the gear lever and shifting action. Nice and precise. Makes up for the slight artificialness of the new electric steering. Still lots of feedback from the wheel through the turns when cranked over, just feels a little numb in a straight line around center. Brakes are very good as always. I think the cabin is even more spacious now. It is rather amazing how much room the Cayman really has. I'm 6'3" and had to move the seat way up and still had almost 3" of head room. Another words track days with helmet on are no problem for anyone up to 6'4" probably. I like the new center console too, in Cayman and in the 991. The standard Cayman puts out 275HP and it feels JUST RIGHT for nice spirited driving on back roads. You actually have a chance to wind out the gears a bit before hitting triple digits! It takes a bit more effort to go fast and you need to REV that motor. All that makes it even more fun. Cayman gives you generous amount (for a sports car of this size!) of trunk space up front and a bit less in the rear compartment. Weekend getaways and even light shopping trips are doable. The way I see it is $11k difference between regular and "S" base cars. Not going to make up the difference in 50HP with aftermarket unless you go forced induction. Who needs that? Suspension could probably use just a bit stiffer springs, no big deal. Brakes are more than good enough for the street so unless tracking, no big deal. So... a nice exhaust, stiffer springs and voila, the Cayman is a FUN, FUN car. If you need more of everything (I doubt you will have MORE fun though) then the "S" is the way to go. Overall I liked the new Cayman a lot. |

I really like the looks of the cayman. If I didn't have a family, I would definitely pick this over a 991.

Very nice looking, Porsche does a great job with 'evolving' a vehicle.

Serge.......Using the "Build a Porsche" calculator. I managed to go from $52,600 base price to $70,220 with just a few options including 19 inch wheels. By the time a dealer adds taxes, tag and title fees the price rises to $75,500. It sure gets up there in a hurry and that's not even the "S" version.

Of course if one gets carried away with a Ferrari build, one can leave the equivalent of a brand new Porsche at the dealer's table. It is really not hard to add another $80k worth of options to a Ferrari. The Cayman I drove had a sticker of $59k and was very enjoyable. More expensive than competition but not terribly so. I just don't know what else I would personally want to drive instead of it at that price. It is a sweet car. |

Serge.......You're right. $7300 for the Burmester sound system and navigation is a pricy option. I do like the 19" wheel package and the two tone all leather interior though.
