Microscopic Views
Yeah, that guy with the "scanning electron microscope" was Dr. Wizard himself...and when he said that some of the media was recorded in "tracks" so narrow that it stretched the resolution of his equipment, I was pretty amazed. I mean, if it can't be seen well via one of those things, how do the folks designing the media know how to work with it? Pretty incredible stuff.

To me, the really amazing parts of this were the folks like Edison and Tesla, who, with their very rudimentary (though state-of-the-art at the time) labs, gave us the beginnings of the media we use today. The further refinements from by Bell Labs, RCA, Philips, Sony and other corporations who have/had pretty much limitless deep pockets.
Our small hobby has been very fortunate in that we've enjoyed the fruits of the efforts that have gone into much, much larger uses (tubes for radio & radar & telephony, solid-state & digital for same, followed by computers and the internet, etc.). If the technical advances we enjoy depended on our hobby's needs as a driver we might still be listening to wax cylinders or 78s.

Heh. It's equally amazing that you don't need to understand how it works to enjoy it. |

Tim, I'm not very tech savvy, so thank God we don't have to understand. Digital is even much more difficult I think, unless you're an IT expert.

Part of that difficulty is it keeps changing as do its media formats.

That was excellent. My mental picture was very different. I think I saw the tip of the stylist as a lot smaller relative to the track. It also, at least in my mind, made me think that the extremely thin coating of... buildup on the needle was probably not going to effect the sound much. So, to me being a fanatical stylist cleaner doesn’t look like it would gain much. The mass of the stylist look enormous in comparison to the coating, which looks like it is just falling off. Suggests cleaning an album after a half dozen plays maybe.

You're absolutely right. Some manufacturers solve this by upgradable chip DACs, and don't use off the shelf parts. That being said, the Burmester in our tube system dates from 2006 and sounds still pretty good.

Indeed. Have fond memories of my McIntosh MVP861. A most forgiving CDP for long-term listening.
