I would not remotely consider an installation that did not employ a whole house surge protector between the light pole and transfer switch. Massive power surges are real. What happens when one hits your pole and you lose power if you have a generator?
I lost power the other day right out of the blue. Generator came on and I went up and listened to my system. Pool kept filtering. TV's worked perfectly. Not only are they peace of mind (which is huge), they are very practical. However, depending on the noise floor of your system, it is not an installation to be taken lightly. I frankly was amazed at the difference between the normal installation and the codes required installation. I didn't pay until it passed codes which took about 4 months. Generator worked perfectly through those 4 months. Also, meticulous maintenance is required costing between 500 to 1000 yearly. IMO a generator can create more problems than solve if the installation is not perfect and not meticulously maintained. Always at minimum have codes inspection and ask if possible for an inspector that does nothing but generators. I really like my generator. Best Charles |

I agree Charles. It took me about 4 months also and multiple visits and inspections. Always best to have an electric company, and a good one, install your generator.
Also a good idea to have a service contract to maintain your generator.

Maybe our systems aren't resolving enough to know the difference.
Mikey has about 800 grand of kit in his house at any given time. Anyway, the PS Audio gear seems to have solved his problem.

I live in an area with periodic, lengthy blackouts. We have no NG or LPG here, so my solution was a manual transfer switch and a portable generator. The system's dedicated lines don't go through the transfer switch so when we have no power, I have no system other than an iPod and headphones. But it's a good low-cost solution.
I think of these generators as a hidden tax and the price we pay for having obsolete infrastructure.

Speaking of 'hidden tax' what are the maintenance and upkeep required of something like a 20-25kw Generac or other similar unit that is connected to my natural gas line? The amount referred to above seems like a lot for something that largely lies dormant. My home, built last year, is pre-wired for a generator.

For the generator I am having installed, a 27 KW water-cooled Generac, the monitoring and maintenance will be $500/yr.

The annual fee is minimal, it's the installation that's expensive.

For my 22kw Honeywell, annual service is about $300. I live in a very rural area so travel time is part of the cost.
