Lightbulb J Corder reel to reel machines
I have been on the fence for over a year on getting a new J Corder Technics reel to reel machine. Jeff does such an amazing job on rebuilding them, and raising the performance level.

Does anyone here have one of his machines?

Mine started out as a J-corder deck. Ivan it all depends on why and what you want to do with the deck. Plus want to spend.

Myles... Not for studio use, definitely a half track machine. Just to record some vinyl, and custom playlists.

I guess what I meant was if you were interested in playing back the latest 15 ips tapes, or just as you indicated making some music reels. If simply the latter, Jeff's machines are just fine. Not only do they look good but all Jeff's decks are serviced, lubed and checked that they meet spec. Yo.u know you're not buying some piece of junk that doesn't work off ePay.

If you're going to play back today's new tapes such as the Tape Project, Opus 3, etc. (there's now 15 companies releasing 2-track 15 ips reel to reel tapes), you'll need the ability to select for IEC equalization. The stock Technics will only do NAB. So that means you'd have to have Jeff bypass the stock electronics (that you should do anyway because we're talking '80s solid-state sound) and hardwire the heads out. Then you'll need to get an outboard tape preamp that will have both NAB and IEC eq curves. Know Jeff will recommend the DeHavilland--and it's not a bad unit--but you can do better.

Another option, depending on how much you want to spend, is one of Greg Beron's UHA tape decks. They are like Jeff's decks, a turnkey approach and come with a 2 year warranty; so essentially they are like new machines. I think they start at around $8000 and depending upon options, outboard power supplies, types of parts, run up to $30K.
