I just realized something about your office system, Pete...

I never really looked into it because I assumed that with all of the power you're pushing in that system, the JBL 4403's were large speakers like the 4311's, thinking something in the lines of the pro versions of the Century L100's or something.

Not until I saw that picture of the back of your new 32" LCD TV did I notice the wall mounted JBL 4403. I said to myself... "Self, those sure ain't no big JBL's!" LOL

As always, very impressive system(s), Pete!

Charles....they are actually JBL 4401's, a small 2-way near field monitor. While I'd certainly love to use something larger, there just isn't room to do it. Believe me, I've schemed over and over how I could mount something larger but it just isn't feasible.

Having said that, you would be very surprised at just how good these little speakers do sound, especially coupled with the JBL ES250PBK sub I am using. They have excellent resolution and imaging characteristics. I was concerned about the increased height of my new rack once the TV is parked on top, with the television possibly encroaching on that left speaker. Measured on a horizontal plane, the top of the TV is roughly 1" higher than the bottom of the speaker, and when seated in the room, it looks like an encroachment visually. However I was please to find that the placement of the TV did not have any sonic impact on the system. I think I made it just under the wire-any higher and the TV would have caused problems.

The 4401's, in the moderately sized office, with the Crown Distinction series system, sound excellent.

Vintage Pete,

Very nicely done! If you don't mind me asking, what was the final cost of all the materials? Must be a heck of a lot cheaper than buying a brand name audio rack. I've been thinking of buying a Solidsteel rack but perhaps I will take your route instead.

greekgod....I didn't save every receipt but suffice it to say it is a very economical way to go. The pine lumber is inexpensive. In my case, I'd be surprised if the total cost exceeded $100. However, you do have to take into account that I re-used the formica-clad top from my old rack, which I had a fellow that does kitchen counter tops, etc make for me. So I would add perhaps $100-$125 for that.

One thing about this type of design is, it is VERY strong. It is likely more stable than any rack you are going to buy. This is the ninth piece of audio furniture of this type that I have built.

This is one of my favorite threads, Pete. I like everything about your office system, especially how it all came together, the planning, research, finding, building. Excellent!

Pete, I have no idea where the number "4403" came from. Maybe it had something to do with it being 12 am and me dozing off a few times before hitting the sack. LOL

I have no doubt those 4401's are good sounding speakers. If they're anything like the L112's I had years ago, they have to sound good. They're great looking little things, too. Glad to hear the new TV doesn't interfere with the 4401's either. That's a good thing!
