Why not think outside the box and instead of a moniker or acronym that in one way or another describes its technological innards give it a name that focuses on its ultimate objective--the presentation of music.
Sostenuto comes to mind. It's "exotic" enough to catch one's eye and ear and at the same time convey what the product brings to the table--the serving up of sustained musical pleasure. Crazy idea, I know. But no wonder--it came to me at 3:30 this morning.

Anybody think that "silent" and "media server" presents an oxymoron?

I just think it's an -E- or -EML- or -E- MS1

Let me add a personal bias.
I think -E- as a logo is a class act. I like the sound of "Emile". You have a small market, but one that takes the developer of a fine product and institutionalizes their name. Thus you have "Conrad Johnson" (two, of course), Carver, and so on. -E- to me is a brand name. You just need model numbers, such as MS1.

I like and would build on the use of "-E-" as a brand with model numbers IF you are looking to build a line of standard models.
If you see yourself staying with a customizable approach than, I would suggest something that denotes that you are bringing a suite of technologies bring to the table. eMST - E-Media Server Technologies or CMST Customizable Media Server Technologies. E.g you don't sell one product, you sell a suite of technologies.

Emile,
Great idea to leverage AA to come up with a good name -- one of the toughest things to do for both companies and products. But it's also the most fun and a chance to apply your personality to the product/company. I fully agree that "PC" in the name might position the product in the wrong space. To me, the word "PC" conjures up images of IBM clones in boring beige boxes. My instinct would also be to move away from acronym-based names which can be quite boring and hard to distinguish/remember. If you go with acronyms I'd keep it simple: AE1 (Audio by Emile 1) Perhaps a name that describes what it does without resorting to acronyms: Audio Valet, Music Valet, ... (the Audio Valet that won't break your Wallet) :-). I'll give it some more thought ... I've found that the best names are served up by the unconscious while you are not thinking about them. Alberto |
