Default Pass labs - oh the choices

Hi all.

Thinking about a new or used pass amp to pair w my magnepan 20.7s.

I typically play around 80-85db … no real head banger music.

The idea of the XA series appeals to me. However , would like to hear if owners feel the X series would drive the Maggie’s better.

I seem to have a Jones for finding the right xa160.5. Would the xa100.5 cut it and I could save some funds? If you think I’m ‘all screwed up’and an X would just be better. Let me know. Thanks. Can’t hear local.

Tim - I have heard the 20.7s……they’re spectacular, probably one of the best values in high end audio. What are you running right now? With a pair of 20.7s, the more power the better regardless of what kind of music you listen to.

Hey buck. Thanks for the reply.

Right now I am driving them with a sunfire signature amp. It is about 20 years old. The topology is pretty different. I believe similar to a class H?? Not sure I am no expert. It is rated at 425 @ 8 ohm and doubles down from there.

And yes … I agree with you on the 20.7.

Hi Tim,

I auditioned the 20.7s extensively at my good friend's place, he's driving them with Apollon PNC 1200 Class D monoblocs and Supratek Cabernet DHT 300B/6SN7 preamp, these speakers are outstanding!

I own a pair of the (much) smaller 1.7s, and as all Maggie speakers they like lots of power/current. I've been getting better results with the Goldmund Telos 280 than with the Pass Labs XA30.8

I also had the X250.8 on loan for a short while, I didn't keep it because I found that the XA30.8 was a better match with the SF Elipsas and the Harbeth 30.1s.

But if I had to chose solely based on the Maggies, I would likely have gone with the X series, more grip on the lower end, better drive in general...

Thanks guys. Like I said in the title. But that is how I feel. I may have to find a way to audition an X series vs the XA. I know Carlos used to run his 20.7 on the xa100.5.

Hey Joel. Yes. I love my 20.7. I feel no need for subs. The bass is so pure with them. I’ve got a nice room for them. I am a soundstage fan and I just don’t think it gets much better than a 6’7” panel. .

I'd love to hear my 30.2s with a Pass XA 30.8 some time...I've been thinking about getting one ever since I built my Pass Class A Amp Camp amps.
