Default Roon Setup

I have Bryston BDP-3 and BDA-3.14. I have installed Roon in Windows. I have both BDP-3 and BDA-3.14 in Roon Ready Mode. BDP-3 has an attached external drive with music. How do I use Roon to play music through the rest of my system (DAC, Pre-amp, Amp, and speakers)? Step-by-step instructions will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Tell us a bit more about what other equipment you have available to you.

1. How are your music files stored?
2. Are you planning on controlling the system remotely, through a phone, tablet or laptop?
3. Do you have a LAN (Local Area Network) connected by Ethernet to your modem or a modem with an external switch? Can you put your storage device and other components on the LAN based on their location(s)?

Roon operates by direct connection (PC to DAC via USB) or it can be done wirelessly using a LAN. If you go the wireless direction then a Control Point is needed in the LAN that the Roon Core (the computer you use to control the music software) can reach out and "touch" on the LAN. I use a Raspberry Pi 4B (RPI) as a control point. It is equipped with a digital toslink "hat" to provide me with an optical connection to the DAC. You can use a USB connection from the RPI to your DAC as well.

I have a Synology Network Attached Storage (NAS) box that holds all my music files. It connects to the LAN via Ethernet, sending the signals downstream to the RPI and then via optical to the DAC.

So how do you want to run your system? Wirelessly? Direct connection? Tell us more about your preferences.

Hello Isaac -

I recommend looking over the excellent Roon knowledge base and get familiar with the concepts. Link is below.

But a simple question: from your Windows-based system, can you see the music library attached to the BDP-3? This implies some networking capabilities on the BDP-3. Not sure it was intended to act as a server.

If you cannot see the library over the local network (LAN), you will need to move it to your Windows system or a NAS or similar.

Here is the link:

Thank you very much, Yamaki and clpetersen for your information. I will answer both of your questions in this post:
1. How are your music files stored? My music is on a portable SSD drive....... I had it attached to the BDP-3.
2. Are you planning on controlling the system remotely, through a phone, tablet or laptop?.......... I am planning on controlling the system remotely by laptop and/or Tablet. Today I have detached the SSD portable drive from the BDP-3 and attached it to the laptop. Roon is able to see the SSD drive and its contents.

clpetersen:
I am definitely looking at the Roon knowledge base and getting familiar with the concepts. Thanks for the Link.
I did not see the music library when the SSD was attached to the BDP-3. So, as I pointed out above I moved the SSD drive to the laptop and I can see the SSD now.
Do you have a LAN (Local Area Network) connected by Ethernet to your modem or a modem with an external switch?............Yes, I have a LAN (Local Area Network) connected by Ethernet to a modem.

Thank you both for your help. I will continue with my adventure. Please post any helpful notes that come to your minds. Now I need to find out if I can play music from Roon.

To see the BDP-3 music library on your LAN from a Windows-based platform, you'll need to engage SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support in Windows. It is deactivated by default.

Isaac - sounds like you are moving in the right direction.

For the future, keep in mind that having the library being 'served' by your laptop (which works very well), implies that the laptop has to be up and running while your music is playing. No auto-power down, etc.
For this reason, many people run their library and Roon core on an 24/7 'appliance' such as a NAS (my choice) or a dedicated server/PC such as Silenzio, a NUC (also offered by Roon), a mac mini, Raspberry Pi, etc.

After going back & forth with Roon for a week it turns out that putting Roon Core or Server on my NUC running Linux takes a "pro", which I am not. I'm going to try loading Windows to see if that works. Fingers crossed that Linux & Windows will work well together.

They do, although the pairing does nothing to simplify using Windows in a networked environment.

Short of purchasing a Mac computer of some sort is there another alternative you would suggest for running Roon?

I'm sorry that I can't help you there, I don't have any experience with Roon.
