Beautiful. Even the deer knows that Goldens are the best dogs in the world.

That is unique and sentimental, but you must be carful around deer, even previously friendly deer, during the rut. Male deer become extremely territorial during the mating season. It is not uncommon for a buck to gore dogs and humans during this time, as they are sensed to be a threat to his herd of females. Bambi is a cartoon character, and it is easy to transfer human emotions to these characters on the screen. Just be mindful, real animals are wild, and can be completely unpredictable and powerful.

I sense from your post he should of had a .44 Magnum tucked in his belt...

Serge.......Not at all. I am an outdoors person, and a big animal lover. I stopped deer hunting back in the late 70's when I lived in Oregon, and my scoped .30-30 Marlin hasn't been pointed at an animal since. It hangs on the wall in my dining room unloaded unless I am at the range.

I know a gentleman who owns a 150 acre horse ranch near Pendleton, Oregon. He had been feeding a male deer for over six months that came on his property regularly out by a long tree line. One day he was out in his Land Rover on the back tree line and spotted the deer he had named Prince. He always carried apples to feed the deer. When he got out of the Rover the buck approached him as usual, and then without warning gored him on the inside of his right thigh and rammed him into the front fender of the Rover. The deer gored him so deep, and was ramming him so hard he could not free himself from the antler. He managed to get his knife out of its sheath, and started stabbing and slicing the deer in the side of the neck until the deer lost enough blood he grew weak and fell, pulling his antler out of my friend's thigh when he finally dropped. To this day he swears that knife saved his life. It took 28 stitches to close that deep hole in his thigh, and a year before he didn't have pain where he was gored. This happened in 1981. He doesn't feed deer anymore, or give them names.

My point is simply that situations can go from cute harmless moments to wild and dangerous events in the blink of an eye. Free roaming animals are called wild for a good reason. We need to remember that, and be aware.

Serge.......It was but a few months back that I watched a doe and two fawns on my back fence line. On that cold January morning I was out feeding the horse. Just on the other side of the pasture fence was a doe nursing her fawns, only about 150 feet from the horse stall and feed room. I was awe struck. It was beautiful to see. Still, I don't feed deer, either. I use to hunt them to eat, but now I just leave them to do their thing in the woods.

About a week ago in the early afternoon I looked out in the pasture to see about fifteen big turkeys pecking at the ground. I love seeing that kind of thing. When I shoot them now, it's with my camera.

Dan, I shoot quite a bit but only at paper and clay targets. I've never been into hunting. I also had a .30-30 Marlin by the way.

Animals have unusual habits, too. Back in the early 70's I had a girlfriend who lived on a small farm in Gresham, Oregon. She had a couple of horses, and a few goats. One day I was over at her big old farm house, and being distracted for an hour or so upstairs, I wasn't paying any attention to what was going on outside. When we came downstairs I happemed to glance through the front living room window at my pickup truck in the front yard. Standing on the roof of my truck was a billy goat, with a second one standing in the middle of the hood. I dashed out the front door, yelling at the goats, trying to startle them off my truck. They would not move. I literally had to drag the one on the hood off, and while this was going on my girlfriend was laughing her ass off. The goat on the roof got down on his own from all the commotion I was making getting the other one off the hood. No metal damage, but plenty of hoof scratches in my paint. I was pissed off. That was the last time I parked my truck inside the fenced area.
