I get to hear them on Thursday too, and looking forward to it.

My sources tell me, lovely integration between drivers, bass to die for, and sweet treble, perfectly balanced.

My new room should be large enough to accommodate the 801D4's, so that's my preference at the moment, although I'll try to arrange a side-by-side demo with the 802.

Someone already compared these two together and the 801 D4's are much better !

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-8wmB9rQ3P0&t

The reviewers here thought the 801 D4's seemed noticeably superior and not just for it's bass extension.

The 802 D4's just seemed "Restrained" by comparison !

The 801's had better articulation on that bass line. more open and natural sounding cymbals, and vocals seemed more realistic and clear.

"Everything" just seemed better with the 801 D4's.

The 801D4's use much better crossover caps in their mids and highs !

Same brand but the premium gold-silver-oil caps are used on the mid driver high pass in the 801D4. Crossover caps are only part of the explanation though, noting that the older 800D2 model uses the same premium Mundorf's in both high and low pass filters - so it's actually more 'premium' than than the latest 801D4.

Of course it's not possible to see the actual values of those caps in the vid, so it's entirely possible that the crossover frequencies differ slightly between models, and there are also resistors off-board to slightly alter the balance between drivers and tailor the filter Q's etc. So even if measurements look similar there may be subtle changes that are easily audible.

What the video does confirm though is the crossover design itself which is essentially identical to the previous D3's, D2's and D1's.
