Default DA1/DA2 Questions

Does the DA1 or DA2 module require software run on a tablet/phone/computer to operate well or is all the functionality included within, say an MAC7200 or MA12000?
Is the software (regardless if it is in the MAC7200 or on a tablet) included with the purchase or of a piece of McIntosh gear with the module or would one do better with Roon or some other 3rd-party software?

Thanks.

Default DA1/DA2 Questions

The DA1 and the DA2 don’t work that way, they’re just the digital input section on the McIntosh unit which they are a part of. For example, say you own an MA9000 with a DA2, it’s just the digital input portion of that integrated amp, the MA9000 will take care of the digital signal fed to it like any other stand alone DAC would do. You just have to switch the input on the MA9000 to the digital input you are connected to (for example usb). No tablet necessary for the DA2, in fact, there is no way for a tablet to do anything other than control whatever device is sending the digital signal.

As far as Roon, the DA1 or DA2 is just an endpoint. You need a Roon device to send the signal to the DAC. In my system, I have an Apple MacMini which I use as a music server with Roon software running it and a tablet to control the MacMini. The MacMini sends a digital signal to my DAC which is simply an end point. The software does not control my DAC, only the MacMini. A McIntosh unit with a DA2 would be no different than my system’s DAC with the exception that the DAC is a DA2.

Does this help?

Yes. Answers my questions on how the DA1/2 work.
Thank you.
