My Dad and I went to see this at the local theater . There was a group from the VFW behind us, age appropriate for WWII . It still gives me chills remembering the comments they made about Normandy Invasion scene.

One gent said My GOD it was just like that.

The tone of the movie is set in the first two minutes. After the present day cemetary scene you move on to the characters in a landing craft and the next thing you know there is machine gun fire and it all starts. I think the most striking scene is after the group attack the radar site and they have the infighting and Tom Hanks character simply says "I was a teacher"..... and they all stop and look.

I've been to Normandy twice now, and certainly the Rangers at the Hoc have not been given enough historical respect. They not only fended off a twin 23mm cannon that was firing on them from the right as they climbed, they also manned the upward road slope at the end to stop a stream of german infantry reinforcements coming down to reinforce the Omaha defenses, and two of them went further a few km's to the small field where the real guns were, before they were manned and used on the shipping; One of them used a 30 cal to stop an onrush of troops coming the put the guns in use, while the other put thermite grenades down the barrels. I past it on my m/bike, they were hidden by high hedgerows.

So they story of Omaha would have been even bloodier, and many lives also were saved on the ships, but for these extraordinary men.

From the Brit perspective, there is the Chateau St Come. A massive 6 day battle between a parachute regiment and repeated mass attacks by swarms of troops trying to mop up the beaches and thus the landings took place here. It is stunningly beautiful, with a horse stud farm to the left and a wood to the right. Turn left at Sword beach and you come to the road hill that leads directly to the beaches leading up to a plateau, and you can't miss it. There are statues either side of the road. A book, 'The day the Devils landed' tells the story.

The thing I regret the most about this movie, is to not have been to theater to watch it when it was prime time.

This one is among my top 5.
