The opening scene where they attacked at Omaha is one you will not forget. The fire power coming down on our boys was insane. Never heard anything like that in my HT, just an over load to my senses.

When you see the scale of the cliffs at pt du hoc (sp) that the Rangers scaled in front of gun emplacments, you realize why these guys had a 28% survival rate. You can walk over the rubble there, in between the bunkers, it looks like a moonscape, and they keep you on a path, ringed by barbed wire, because of the risk of unexploded armaments. The fields of graves, all sorts, crosses, jewish stars, etc. tell the story better than anything. (and some of the breakwaters were still out at sea, quite visible, though they are slowly rusting away)
You can take the TGV (nice train) out toward Mt St. Michel, stay the nite at the on the slopes below the cathedral (i know it sounds hokey but most of the tourists leave and you have a medieval city to yourself, you can walk the ramparts). The drive up to Normandy is quite beautiful, as long as the weather holds. You also appreciate why they were so concerned about the weather for the landing. It is a pretty moody place, even when the sun is shining. A memorable place, with powerful history.

Thanks for insight to a D-Day site. One day I want to visit these beaches and see it first hand.

Thanks for everyone's comments. If you have not seen it in awhile it might be time to pull it out... especially if you have it in BR with a descent surround system!

Must get the BR version when that MVP89 arrives. The DTS DVD was amazing for its day...

My father , RIP, could never watch it. He was a field medic during D-Day. They were the first to be targeted by the german soldiers. He quickly changed helmets.

I will be visiting Normandy, the American Cemetery and Visitors Center in just over a month. I will be there on May 29th, just missing the Memorial Day celebrations.

Movies like Saving Private Ryan and Band of Brothers for the first time made people realize the true horrors of war and what those brave soldiers went through. I had three uncles that were in the army during WW2. Two were in Europe and one in the Pacific. One of my uncles that fought in Europe was shot down in a plane and never recovered. He is recorded as "missing in action or buried at sea". He is remembered at the Tablets of the Missing at the Sicily - Rome American Cemetery at Nettuno, Italy. Thank God for our Vets, especially the ones that didn't come home.
