Update #3:
Sure wish I had tried a good NOS R2R Ladder DAC a lot sooner. "more natural" and "less forced" sounding comes to mind now. Way more engaging for a much wider variety of low to mid grade content. |

How does it sound with high rez content?

Wonderful. While it's 24bit/192khz capable with digi coax I've been using, I've tried higher rezo content and the DAC seems to do just fine with it. Makes one wonder where the point of diminishing return begins when it comes to high resolution content and players/dacs.
This exercise of going backwards in compute technology in a DAC has me wondering what kind of DACs will be developed in the next few years in dealing with higher sampling rates and higher resolution content. i.e. "more" and "faster" may not always be better, but as I've heard and read many times, it's all about the design and implementation around the chip. That may be, but there does seem to be something magical about some of these older chips it seems. |

I have a Cary DAC. Not sure how it rates.
I've kind of given up on getting digital to sound they way I want. Listening to Susanne Vega. It's going to be a while. They just discover recently and admitted that there is a ringing in 44.1. This is why you have digital listening fatigue. |

"Had" is the operative word now, no more fatigue, gone with the right DAC. Would have never believed it 'til I finally tried a good R2R Ladder DAC with the right chip and design around it. It is the closest to vinyl I've ever heard with any digital device or recording. Floridaboy knew the simple secret long ago it seems. Took me way too long to get here. If I only had a clue five years ago before buying, trying, different amps, tubes, upgrades to other gear. This made the most immediate difference for digital in my system, fwiw. Opinions and feedback will vary of course.

I've kind of given up on getting digital to sound they way I want. How do you want it to sound? Who are they? This is audio. Don't believe everything you read. The forums are full of armchair digital engineers. I'm not and don't pretend to be. Have a look at the 47 Labs website and read their take on Redbook. Is it the Cary DAC-100 or DAC-100T by chance? I ask because I considered one as a Cary Audio owner of other amps and preamps, I kept reading the demos and trials of others to find out there are people who've actually demo'd or owned over 20+ DACs looking for a particular sound. From this I sort of concluded each DAC must have it's own flavor for folks to keep trying different dacs One member on another forum claimed he had tried over 30. Some of those groups led me away from the newer type dacs and chipsets after demo'ing a few myself already, not able to guess any more. Then, started reading show reports of the best sounding rooms, and tied that back to a particular type of DAC people were running. Soon learned, all DACS are not created equal and the most expensive DACS may not be the right ones anyhow. This helped narrow down the search to rid my system of "digital fatigue" as you describe it. |
