Congratulations, deshapiro. May you enjoy many happy listening hours with this excellent piece of gear.
My SP3 displays the firmware version, along with the serial number. Page 43 of the manual illustrates this. Pressing the left navigation button should get you there. I believe the firmware does show up when you first turn the unit on. Just get close enough to look at the screen.

No reason you can't use the PC based (Mac for me) intranet menu and see it in the lower left corner that also contains the serial number, etc. I keep a laptop in my living room for checking mail etc and often pull up this page to see what type of decoding is occuring and what volume level is set. Obviously my unit isn't co-located with my video display. No need to "catch" it on restarting etc.

James, Buseto makes an excellent point. Might Bryston develop an email list for owners of the SP3 (and other apt products) to notify us of firmware updates, hardware upgrades, and other pertinent information?
It seems like it would benefit Bryston as well as the owners to develop an owners registry of this type. Perhaps we could email a copy of our receipt(s) to confirm our warranty coverage, so Bryston would have a record of purchases from authorized dealers and a database to confirm an authorized purchase for secondary owners whose products would still be under warranty. 1. I clarified my point to gbaby, because of a misunderstanding.
2. James had already reacted: (#625): 'We will be looking at a notice which will pop up on the SP3 webpage as we now do with the BDP-2'. and that is fine by me. 3. I hope it will not be restricted to the period the SP3 is under warranty. (As SoThere suggests.) |

Buseto, my point was not to restrict any aspect of the SP3's services to only in-warranty units. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
While the notice on the SP3 webpage is a great move (thanks James and Stan), there is likely a significant group of users of this and other Bryston products who will not connect the devices to a network, and perhaps another significant number who (although connected to a network) will use the front panel and remote rather than a web app or page to manage the SP3 (or BDP and other such devices). It seems to me that a group email is an active rather than passive way to notify owners of such matters as firmware updates, hardware upgrades, and other pertinent information. Bryston's new (and very well done) monthly update newsletter uses just this model, and such notices could be integrated therein, or published via the News At It Happens or Weekly Digest documents. Here's the URL to subscribe: Bryston Ltd. List It also seems like an owners registry would be of significant benefit. Bryston would have a record of purchases from authorized dealers, and prospective buyers of used products still within warranty would be able to confirm that the product was originally purchased from an authorized dealer. Important information, such as known issues, updates, and upgrades could be communicated quickly and easily. I certainly understand that this would create work for Bryston, and doubtless James and the other principals will determine the cost-benefit. Cheerio, Rich _______________ Foggy Napa Valley |
