Seconded. Without reservation, given what the Altaira has demonstrated here.

Yeah, it's remarkable what Altaira does for the presentation.

UPS said yesterday that the USB-A ground tail adapter was scheduled for delivery this afternoon. It arrived at 9:35 this morning. And immediately wound up installed here on my Dell laptop. It's connected at the banana-jack end to the Venom CGC/SGC ground cable feeding the Altaira:

Is it an audible improvement over my jury-rigged 16-gauge wraparound connection to the neck of the Venom's spade connector?

No contest. And that's cold out of the box. You name it--perceived image focus and definition, foundational heft, tonal purity, "breathably" expansive soundstage "air" are all noticeably improved with the ground tail installed.

Now awaiting the arrival of Alpha CGC/SGCs to replace the Venoms...and a set of SSF-38 feet to replace the Altaira's stock footers.

At that, even as currently configured, what the Altaira brings to the sonic table strikes me as one of the most profound audio upgrades heard since I entered this hobby by purchasing a Fisher 500C FM receiver at the Subic Bay Navy Exchange in September 1964.

It has also put to conclusive rest--to my satisfaction, anyway--the question raised in another thread about whether age-degraded hearing (I turn 84 tomorrow) justifies the continued purchase of wallet-gnawing audio gear. The Altaira has rendered the answer a resounding "YES!"

Thank you, Ivan. You can guess how I'm "celebrating." And still shaking my head at what I'm hearing.

Popcorn. Yummy. And so appropriate.

I spent part of the afternoon listening to Jerome Moross' film scores for two American Westerns--The Jayhawkers and The Proud Rebel from a released-in-2000 two-CD Silva Classics set (The Cardinal - Classic Film Scores of Jerome Moross, Paul Bateman conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic, 16/44).

The films are eminently forgettable. But the music performances are superb, and the scores are, IMO, every bit the pulsing-dynamic equal of, if not superior to, Moross' The Big Country. What makes them stand out even more is the wide-open-space engineering that laid them down on Silva disc. (Yeah, I bet you saw what I did there.)

I've always considered this two-CD set one of my standout performance-venue demos. But smack me in the face if I was prepared for a Carol Anne "they're here" moment the instant The Jayhawkers got underway. POW! Yes, I'd taken one to the aural gut pre-Altaira at the onset of that opening passage. But not this viscerally nor with the enveloping immediacy delivered to my listening position after I'd installed the VTX-Ag USB-A ground tail on the laptop this morning.

I'd sum it up as, "Expanded space, meet articulate-to-the-nines instrumental presentation and dynamic flow."

There is, however, a potential downside to all this Altaira-induced they're-in-my-lap ear candy. I risk falling into that abysmal state American classical composer William Schuman once termed--disparagingly--"soundbathing," where sonorous bliss obliterates listener concentration on the structure, development, and flow of a given composition, losing all sense of the composer's intent. Or, for that matter, the performer's. OTOH, I'd argue--respectfully, of course--that rendering the sonic window as transparent as it has become here with Altaira at Ground Zero gives the listener a much better aural "look" at what a composer or performer has on his/her mind.

Do I worry about it? Hell, no. I'm having way too much fun.

Yep, that happens to me all the time since I installed my Altaira system.

I call it a "quasi-trance-like" state. I find myself starting a playlist, then "waking up" at 1 or 1:30 AM from an entire night of listening, being completely "lost" in the music.
