There was a fundamental flaw in the thinking of OceanGate founder, Stockton Rush. While carbon fibre can be very strong when used in applications where it is used in tension, it is NOT strong when used in applications where it is under compression.

This unwillingness by Stockton Rush to understand and act on this specific knowledge, as well as not to comply with safety testing and certifications, was likely due to some narcissitic characteristics in his personality, including grandiosity, arrogance, and a sense of entitlement.

Narcissism. Stockton manifested Grandiosity and other narcissistic personality problems. This resulted in him thinking he "knew better" and didn't give credibility to others that did, including James Cameron.

Well, I definitely agree that some of us need to chill, about many things.

But there is ample evidence that Mr Rush was arrogant wrt his engineering prowess, and cavalier with others' lives. Having run several science-based companies myself, I cannot quite believe that he did not heed the letter from industry leaders, and also learn enough about carbon fiber, before risking lives here
