This an exceptionally fine Eight. Wand draws from the Berliners sound of great power and transparency. The original RCA recording was quite good, but the Esoteric remastering produces a richer sound that yields greater impact. Enjoy!
From the Kolner Rundfunk band, to the North German Radio Symphony Orchestra out of Hamburg, to the mighty Berliners as you found - Wand gets Bruckner.

Someone else who gets Bruckner is Karl Böhm. Try his Seventh with the Wieners.

Bruckner takes time. And who has more of that than Celi !

Good morning folks, Today I'm Listening to . . . . Dvořák Cello Concerto in B Minor Op. 104

Gregor Piatigorsky - Cello

Boston Symphony Orchestra - Charles Munch, Conductor

An RCA Living Stereo LP, Recorded in 1961

The Dvorak Cello Concerto is just plain beautiful music and this recording is an excellent example. I've played it so often over the past 50 years that it is just about worn out.

Gergiev leads his London forces in a superb performance of Rachmaninov's 2nd Symphony. Excellent sound, too.

I have not made the effort to play this disc because I am so frequently disappointed by Gergiev as well as by LSOLive sound. Is this really an exception? (There are more than a few.)

It definitely sounds better than most of the Shostakovich or Mahler discs, and he doesn't sound asleep on the podium, either. It's not quite up to the best of Channel Classics, for instance, but it's absolutely better than most of his other recordings.

I've read effusive praise for this performance and recording as well as stiff criticism. It is new to me (although the compositions are old friends). As I learn I'd be interested in what you all think of it, I'm sure many of you have listened to it. One thing is for sure, the percussion can give your speakers an anaerobic workout. ; )

Don't know about the subject recording, but Gergiev's survey of Tchaikovsky's late symphonies with the VPO on Phillips sounds pretty good (but I would not call it a reference level recording).

Try this one from '94. I find the odds improve when he's on his home turf with the Kirov.

... but no guarantees!
