David, I'm so glad to hear that your enjoyment of your setup is growing. You really have a sweet sounding system, and I completely understand how it takes you away.

Lisa and I were in Princeton the other day, and I made my first ever visit to Princeton Record Exchange...believe it, or not, I couldn't find a single record I wanted! I was shocked, though, at how many people were in there hunting for vinyl...much to the point of that video.

David,

That's great to hear. Many others, me included, have fallen back under the spell of vinyl. I am soooo glad I did not give away my entire record collections when CDs came on the scene.

Having said that, I must say that digital these days sounds better than ever. With the MDA1000, I can listen to digital all day long without fatigue and plenty of enjoyment -- but vinyl adds a little extra.

I also like the vinyl rituals. Taking a CD from a plastic case and slapping it on a tray and pressing a button is not as involving as taking a beautiful slab of vinyl and carefully lowering the cartridge on its grooves.

Dave, Did you sneak by the 8,000 post mark without anyone noticing? Anyway Congratulations on having the fastest fingers in Tennessee! I think I'll start a new thread in commemoration of the event!

David,
You're absolutely right about the je ne sais quoi of vinyl. Maybe part of it is that listening to vinyl usually means taking the time to really listen. In my experience, most listening time is with the server, I really spend very little time just listening. I'm almost always at least reading, if not working at the computer, etc. When we spin vinyl, it's almost always been a matter of actively listening.

Anybody remember the turntables with the tall spindles that would allow you to drop 4 or 5 LPs? As a little kid I'd DJ my folks parties by taking the stack, flipping it over, and playing the other side of all the albums. No wonder some of those discs now in my possession are so scratched!

It's good to hear more people saying that they in fact have quiet records. I've always taken good care of my LP's and have paid attention to keeping them clean. I rarely hear background noises, so it never bothers me.

I've just found that having a good analog front end kept forcing me to get a better digital front end as a result.

Apart from what you hear, albums also force you to be more interactive with your music. I think when we "set it and forget it", as we do with our digital music, the music eventually gets forgotten, or becomes background noise to what we are really doing (cooking, washing the dishes, typing on an online forum...)

Getting up to flip sides and drop the needle snaps us back into what's playing.

Perhaps it's the difference between "listening" and "hearing."

David,
Great post. Completely agree...vinyl rules! It just sounds so much more like music. I have a music server too, and all that, but when I want to settle in for a night of listening, it's vinyl and the TT!

David,
I can't agree with you more. There is something more alive when listening to LP's. I still listen to a lot of digital simply because my digital collection is far larger but do enjoy the ~500 JAzz LP's I have very much and try to listen to them in every opportunity I have.

I just purchased a new VPI classic to upgrade my existing turntable. It should be arriving to the next few weeks. I will post my impressions once it arrives.
