Direct drive vs Belt drive

I'm an ugli fruit lover which is a Jamaican tangelo, a citrus fruit created by hybridizing a grapefruit (or pomelo according to some sources), an orange and a tangerine.

In TT lingo that equates to an MT10. ().

I check the speed periodically and after day 1, have never had to tweak it a mm. I like the notion the table checks the revolutions using 1595 mico-strips underneath the platter. Seems to work better than fine.

Bob.......Over time I find myself warming to the MT10. Technically it is a superb turntable, and has gotten good reviews. The fly in the ointment for me is that front panel and static meter. I just cannot get use to that design flaw.......er, characteristic. The side view looks good. The front view is another story. I think your fruit analogy is quite accurate.

I agree with you Dan, it is not easy to get used to that design. I can't really decide for myself. I only know that deck from pictures and I believe it looks way better when you're standing right in front of it. At least I can say that I like it more now that the first time I saw it.

that's a shindo garrard 301.

it's the forgotten category, Idler drive. I have heard quite a few 301's, yet not a single shindo, all nicely built with a very nice and heavy plinth though.

I am a very big fan of idler drive myself, I own 3 lenco L-75's, which I all rebuilt myself, all with a better plinth, and one of them (my main tt, now in "surgery" for upgrades), seriously built out. I have compared them to many belt drive turntables and none of them impressed me. Some of them where a tad quieter, but none of them had the dynamics, the "drive", the liveliness and fullness of the sound.

All it takes is a little DIY'ing
