Halgorythme PSE are in the house !
If you have followed the previous thread regarding this brand, you must have noticed that I've been enthralled by the sound they made.
I discovered them for the first time at Jérôme's place and I couldn't believe what I was hearing after the first few notes! This was a system that was punching way above its weight. I then contacted Cédric to have another demo at his place where Meta and Bart joined me. They got the bug afterward and I met them a second time at their place this time to listen to those fantastic amps a third time. In the meantime, Cédric made me an offer I couldn't refuse: he proposed me to buy his very own prototype including the tubes he selected for himself. They also would be available right now whereas the wait time for a new pair would be october at the very earliest. We planned a delivery last Sunday and I was excited to see him arrive here with the amps. The weather was crappy so that was the perfect excuse to spend the day inside. Installation was a breeze, I quickly removed the Manley and Cédric installed the amp with the tubes while explaining everything at the same time. Not only does he provide a full service but he also gives you a lot of insight on how he build them and why he made them this way. After each discussion with him, you learn a lot and share a true passion for music and audio. Once installed, I turned my trusted Accuphase preamp and PS Audio DSD. I put some of my very favorite tracks and I was in shock. If I had to summarize those amps in one word, it would be purity! There is nothing between you and the sound, no background noise, everything is silent and black except the music. The precision of the soundstage was unbelievable, you could pinpoint the musician with amazing accuracy. The music was less in your face and more subtle, bass was significantly drier leading to more texture which is delicious when listen to a double bass for example. Using my Avid Sequel SP with the Ortofon Cadenza Blue lead to even better details and musicality. One could really hear the superiority of vinyl over digital. We moved back and forth but the sound was improved in every way. Cédric told me that the sound was to weep for. He was so moved that it was hard to turned it down and even being very late for his next meeting, he insisted that we listen one more time "to make sure everything is playing fine". We ended up listening to Porgy and Bess played by Ella and Louis (the Verve Boxset from 1968). The voices of Ella and Louis were amazingly rich while the orchestra in the background was filling up the room. Sadly, the stress of work and overall busyness are preventing me to have extending listening sessions and to enjoy them fully. I'm looking forward the long week-end to quick back, relax and enjoy the sound. If I were completely honest, I would have liked to have the power of the 48W (all in pure class A) but more as a nice to have feature than really needing it. While the Halgorythme are an improvement to the Manley, I believe they are truly great amps and very underrated by audiophiles. They can compete with the best amps with no shame and they actually beat my previous Accuphase e360. I will complete the thread as I spend more time with the Halgorythme. I believe they are like a good wine and get better with time and you appreciate them more over the long run. |
